I currently have the Optoma 1090HDR 1080p. I am wanting to see if anyone has upgraded this projector to a 4k option. If so, what projector did you upgrade to and was it worth the upgrade? Thank you for your insights!

Worth Upgrading Optoma 1090HDR

Yours is laser, short throw lens, no lens shift.
I bought an Optoma UHD35STX, which is 3600 lumens ( traditional lamp ), 3840x2160, short throw lens, and shooting on an 11' wide screen.
My Sim went live a few weeks ago, but prior to that I was a long-time home-theatre guy ( always JVC projectors )
My PC running FSX Play has an RTX 4080, so I'm not under-gunned on my source.
Also factor in a 4080 ( maybe 4070ti ) if you currently have a lesser GPU.
For me, I don't really think 4K to be worth it, considering your 1090HDR is no slouch.
I'd think you would really need to move up market for a noticeably better PJ.
When buying an pricier PJ, you are paying for things like lens shift, a better quality variable lens, and other stuff you might not need.
I also find that impact screens, vs a home theatre screen, to diffuse/soften the image.
... just me 2 cents ~ Andy
P.S. You might want to message this guy who has both 1090HDR and UHD35stx:

I have a 4K viewsonic, I honestly don't see a difference in 1080p picture and the 4K picture. I am guessing our screens are not of the quality required to truly render all those pixels perfectly. I always have some sort of a divot from the last ball in the screen so never shooting on a perfect surface, as well as a little slack to keep bounce back at a minimum. I watch football on amazon prime in 1080p and it looks great. I run GSPro and FSX Play in 4k, it looks great. If I upgraded it would be to get to 5000 lumens from my current 3800 ish. Being able to have more ambient light without impact would be nice. I also find I had to turn the brightness down from max to get good picture quality so having more means more room to adjust. Also having good horizontal and vertical offset would improve picture brightness and quality as well. From what I have seen though you will need to jump from $1200-1500 projectors to $3000-5000 projectors to get any real benefit. My two cents. Hoping in a year, laser or LED is more price attainable and we see some super bright Sim projectors >4000 lumens usable from BenQ for larger screens.

I was wondering about this very thing. I bought the LK936ST today. It should be here early next week. I have been running the Optoma projector for a few years. I am hopeful that I will see a big difference. . .I am confident if I get a better material for the screen it would be a big difference…but looking forward to the test.Originally posted by hamviper View PostI have a 4K viewsonic, I honestly don't see a difference in 1080p picture and the 4K picture. DreamsofaGamer Yes. I got the BenQ and the difference is significant. I had the Optoma EH200ST. With the BenQ ambient light isn’t much of an issue. The picture quality is significantly better. I can’t say for sure if the difference is 4k vs HD…or if it’s because the new projector is laser…or because the new projector is 5100 lumens.
The picture quality is so much better, however, I am now on the search to get the best screen possible so that I can make sure there are no waves/wrinkles and will project the best picture quality. I am also looking at possibly getting one of the ground up screens that I could simply lay on the left side of the enclosure and put in the middle if we want to use it for watching TV. The projector is badass.
