  • Mevo+ spin axis issues

Today was the first day that I really was able to try out the Mevo+ indoors. It started out very well and I was impressed with what I was seeing and numbers were similar to the Skytrak. More importantly the numbers were correlating to how my shots were feeling. I went pitching wedge, 8 iron and 6 iron. The M+ never missed a shot but it did have two shots it did not pick up club data but showed ball data. Spin axis seemed just fine as I was trying different shots (draws, fades etc) to see what it would pick up and it seemed fine. Spin axis was always a little less then the skytrak but only by a little.
Where things got weird was when I moved to the Driver. It would only read a large “right” spin axis where the skytrak would read left. The discrepancy was large. I even hit a few snap hooks on purpose and it would still read only a right axis. Has anyone seen this, or have any idea what is going on? I tried this with my 3 wood and same thing. Tried it with a hybrid and same issue. Went back to my 6 iron and it read almost exactly the same as the skytrak and would post a left axis when I hit a draw. I took some screen shots so you can see what I mean. It was odd to say the least and very disappointing. I had about 30 shots with the driver and maybe had 3 that showed any form of left axis.
I will add more pictures when I get them organized.
And none of you long bombers laugh at my weak numbers, I just turned 60, but I am a 5.4 index so I can play. Lol 😆
Mevo+ was 8ft from tee. 12 feet of ball flight. I tried both indoor and short indoor and found not difference. Almost all shots were with prov1 with metal dot. Tried without dot and no difference. No metal door behind screen (garage door is behind Mevo+)
Wire cables hold up screen but no other metal to interfere.
Tried with Skytrak removed and no change.
I have a fluorescent light in hitting bay, but it is not on. Does that matter if its on or not?? I know it can cause interference but is that with it on and why only driver and woods?
I tried leveling and aligning Mevo+ several times but no difference.
I will take it to the range in the next day or two to see what it will show (just need it warm up a few degrees)

pwade3 i actually am starting to think you may need to do a remote session with FS. However, I would definitely try the 16 feet of distance to see if it makes a difference, but it just does not make sense that you cannot get a left spin to occur. Boggles my mind really. I think FS should be able to see things more clearly if the are able remotely log in and see what if going on in your room.

I also assume your alternate set up to get 16 feet of ball flight that this would be a set up that would remove the metal door from the equation and hopefully put your mind at ease that this is not the problem. If you get left spin at 16 feet, then you could reduce the ball flight until you get down to your current hitting distance. Obviously if you get down to your current distances with the different set up, then you know you have an interference issue.

min terms of the using the indoor mode outside, I just really am not sure that is going to tell you much given the radar will read the ball for a much longer period. However, it will give you some peace of mind hopefully that the indoor mode works proper (at least the calculations for indoor do). Hopefully it also tells you that you can hit it left when you want and thus, help your indoor testing knowing you can do it and the unit should pick it up.

great to hear how accurate it was in outdoor mode though as the unit is still not measuring the entire flight of the ball (I remember them saying they will not say how much distance they do measure).

nit sure this helps, but please let me know your thoughts.

I did a quick test (45 shots) in the sim at 16ft of flight and 8ft M+ to tee. I was able to get a left spin axis. It did not start out that way. First 6 shots were a large right axis of 25+. When I was at the outdoor range today my first 10 shots never deviated past 7 left or right. My worst was 12. My first few shots indoors at 16ft were an axis of 42r 35r 27r 16r. I then really tried to hook the ball and I was definitely able to get left axis. The problem was it seemed to be all over the place. Massive left spin sometimes then a massive right axis. I had a few shots that were actually good with about a 5 deg left spin axis. I did not have my Skytrak going so nothing to compare and to be honest, I was getting really tired (age in not on my side) and my swing was getting loose. Too many days swinging trying to figure this thing out. This is so not scientific but it felt like if you missed the shot at all as far as non center hit or club face slightly open or missed swing path, it created a massive number for the axis either left or right. Near the end I was pull hooking the ball and I was not striking it like I was at the range so not the greatest test. My AOA was getting negative with the driver trying to hook. Poor test.
I am going to have a friend come over, hopefully tomorrow and we will see what he produces. I need to eliminate me (even though I’m sure its not). He is a higher Hdc then me but hits a straight ball. I also have another friend who likes to draw his driver so I will see when I can get him over also.
I should also note at that 16foot distance, I was able to have my hybrid show normal data (again without comparison to anything) but I did not have that at the shorter indoor setup.
I also know someone with a outdoor hitting net, so I will ask if I can try that as I can create the same distances as indoor setup. This would eliminate issues with my indoor setup.
I agree with DAX that I would like to have Flightscope do a remote session with me. I have reached out to them. Thanks again you guys.
      I’m going to bed......

One thing I've wondered between E6 and the FS app is the distance between the M+ and the tee. In E6, the max distance is 10'. When this is changed the roll angle you set the M+ seems to change. Within the FS app the max is 9'.

Is it better to have 9' or 10' behind the ball? I'm assuming you should have both apps set to the same distance?

I think the roll angle changes to pick up putting. Not sure though.

Maybe I’m not alone! 🙄 Sorry, I circled I circled the wrong data on top left screen, but that just makes it worse.

Could you explain the data? To me it looks like the ball is starting right and slicing but the data indicates a push draw?

Nope, can’t explain it. It’s from the videos that they posted on YouTube. It is the issue that I am seeing with my Mevo+. My skytrak shows a draw and the Mevo+ shows a large slice. It’s the same in the picture I posted. Mevo+ shows right spin axis and everything else shows left spin axis or spin rate.

This was my video - we saw a variety of strange spin axis readings. In the comments to that video is a link to the raw data.

You know, I was thinking about my simulator environment. I think I can eliminate that as a couple of years ago I had our head professional come here (he coach’s our daughter) as the course was closed for snow. He brought his Flightscope, which I think is a Xi Tour but not completely sure. I had my ST set up and we compared data as our daughter hit balls. The data was relatively close. The point I’m getting at, was there were no wild swings in data parameters that I’m getting with M+. He was here for about an hour, he analyzed his data and I don’t remember him thinking anything was amiss. I have not changed anything environmental other then the projector, but I have been hitting the M+ with the projector off.
I will still take it to my friends outside hitting net and see what I get just to be sure.

Does anyone know if there is a way to upload FS or FS Skills data to a spreadsheet or something to better see it all at once. It’s a pain to scroll through it all when it will not even fit on the screen.

I have had the same issue with spin axis and everything showing up as a fade or slice in both E6 and the FS golf app. I typically play a straight ball or slight draw, so this is a bit concerning. Short irons seem to be fairly accurate but long irons and woods in particular show nothing but a fade/slice. I have called and emailed FS multiple times and the most recent response is that there may be a camera misalignment with some units. Apparently the camera may look aligned, but the ball is actually launching from an off center position when looking at the 3D view in FS Golf. I am going to hit some additional shots this evening and will report back.

RT3 That’s interesting. I would have thought that it would effect the horizontal launch angle, but it might effect it to read the club HA and VA correctly if misaligned which would create odd numbers. I will try different alignment to see. I had no such problem at the outside range and I used the alignment camera there, but it tracks the ball a lot further so some calculations are reduced.
Thanks for letting us know. Let us know what you find.

Short indoor did not work well at all. Numbers seemed to be all over the place and it even missed some shots. It was also defaulting to a launch angle of 28.3. I could not figure why so I had my daughter come down and hit some drives with her clubs (she’s a really good golfer) and all her drivers registered 28.3 LA. All of them.
I then changed the set up to indoor mode and it worked much better. No default 28.3 launch angles and numbers seemed more consistent. I could not get it to register a left side spin. Please note I was using the E6 driving range for this to see if I could get any different results then what I had with FS app.
I was going to enter the ST data into the spreadsheet but my session did not upload to ST site for some reason. Yesterday’s did, but not today. I had taken some screen shots so that is where that data came from.
I was unable to get the Mevo+ to register a left side spin at anytime, no matter what I tried. I could hook the ball and it would only register a right side spin. If you look at the screen shot of the ST you can see that all shots were draw but M+ shows all with large side spin. The ST screen shot is for the indoor mode (not short indoor).
I did try a big slice to see what type of side spin the M+ would register but it basically registered the same right spin number that I was getting when I hit a draw. I was expecting a much larger right spin. Odd.
I did turn off my projector as it was 9 feet in front of the M+ but that made no difference. Unfortunately it is suppose to get to -10C tonight so likely the course will be closed tomorrow.
I will contact Flightscope and ask what they think 🤔. I’m at a loss.
pwade3 I think we have the same Mevo+ Unit.

My story is almost word for word your same story... short indoor mode, I have biased right spin axis, mostly when the HLA is right, and very exaggerated with hybrid/woods/driver. I rarely get a draw that starts right and crosses over the center line, if ever. I can draw it easily if the HLA starts left. I chalk a lot of this up to gear effect/bulge and roll in the woods, which is why it's exaggerated in those clubs even more.. but the spin axis differences are quite large at times.

I also have the same experience with vertical launch angle. When using FS Golf, and the Mevo+ tilt angle is around 15-16 degrees in the setup screen, I get a consistant 20.0 vertical launch in PW-7i... starting with 6i and up VLA is fine, since I don't launch it ever more than 20. With wedges it's also fine, but get 25-30 VLA on wedges... and if I try to punch or chip one low with a wedge... never goes any lower than 20.0. Using E6 and I have the Mevo+ tilt angle around 11 degrees (as needed for sim play) my VLA is exactly 28.3 almost always... so in E6 I tilted the Mevo+ back to 15-16 degrees, hit some shots, and it was 20.0 again just like FS Golf.. so it correlated with the Mevo+ tilt angle. Also had a couple buddies over to hit shots... same experience for them.

It was driving me crazy, and I thought it had to be my environment. Tore apart the garage, moved everything metal I could aside from my exterior door that leads to the house which is few feet right of my screen, and my garage opener/projector above me. Still same results...

I reported both to Flightscope. I didn't get much detail back, aside from a note from support saying senior engineers looked at my issue/reported findings and concluded there has to be something wrong with my unit. They sent me a shipping label for return and replacement...

So long story short, you are not crazy... and in a misery loves company kind of way... I'm super glad you posted this so I was also able to validate my findings are not unique either... to be clear, I'm not upset or angry with the issues... glad they are being addressed by Flightscope actually... it's the risk of early adoption in my opinion.

Just before I shipped it back today though, I got to hit some shots in a dome on Saturday, and the range opened up on Sunday last weekend as well, and I had a chance to try it in long indoor mode in the dome, and outdoor mode on the range before getting it to UPS... much like you again, long indoor mode and outdoor mode was really really good.. shot shapes were great, distances and other values were pretty much spot on. I couldn't validate launch angle, since off those hard mats, I couldn't launch it more than 16-18 degrees to see if it limited out at 20.0 again... and have to say even in outdoor mode, although 80-90% of my shots were spot on, I still had a few drivers shots that drew on the range, but Mevo+ showed a LOT of right spin axis and a slice... so it still wasn't perfect... but miles better than short indoor mode with my screen in my garage..

I'm sure I won't have my Mevo+ back for a while... but will report back once I do on if things are any different.

One of the more interesting shapes I've seen on video was from the guy who compared GCQuad with MEVO+.

Tester was RH. The ball started right, then it started to draw, but the graphic on the M+ app showed the flight straightening out, instead of continuing to draw. My only guess was the algorithm for lateral spin decay was too "strong."

I've only seen movement like that in person from a strong low cap (former D1 athlete) who regularly drives it 300. Ball speed so fast, and with such square contact, the ball starts right, then moves left almost on a diagonal line, instead of a draw or curve.

tonybrown32 I had been directed to your FB page by Ron at Gunghogolf and I was reading your thread last night and thought the same thing. We are having the same issues. I have not had any luck with Mevo support though. I reported the problem but they have not responded. Did you call them or phone them? I’m glad that they are looking after you. I was going to have someone come over so that I could eliminate me, but we are on social distancing at the moment and my friend with the hitting net is on a 14 day self quarantine (he does not have covid 19 but is ill). So I am stuck trying to figure this thing out myself in my Sim but I was sad to hear you were having the same issues, but was relieved that its not just me. Misery loves company as they say!! I have tried numerous things to eliminate my environment also but I’m sure its not the issue. I will try again tomorrow. Thanks for posting. Very interesting what you went through. Let us know how the new unit performs.

Like you, was bummed reading about your issues, but glad it wasnt just me! As far as contacting support, I simply emailed support@flightscope.com. Emailed both issues at seperate times in detail with my testing I did and my findings.

First time I emailed about the biased right spin axis I was seeing.. I got a response after several days, stating they were aware of some right spin bias in short indoor mode and was something they needed to look into further, and would be in touch with any new information.

A couple day later I noticed the repetitive 20.0 launch angle on short irons and reported that as well. It did take them over a week to respond, and when I did get a response, it had no explanation, just an email stating they needed my order number to process my warranty issue/replacement.

From there I inquired again asking for some additional details since I wasnt really asked any additional questions or anything.. I was curious how they came to the decision it needed replacement.. was it the launch angle or the spin axis issues? The answer I got back was that the senior engineers felt that with the numbers I was getting, there must be something wrong with the unit itself, and will do some tests on the unit and either send me another unit or update software if that's the case.

Really hoping the unit I get back has the issues resolved.. if I have the same issues it is far more likely it's an environmental issue, since few others seem to be having the same issues. The only thing I can still see being an environmental issue is the garage opener/projector above my hitting mat at about 8.5-9 feet above the floor.. I have no florescent lights, and no fans, and tested it with the refrigerator unplugged and moved across the garage.. opener and projector are only things left, and I've done most of my hitting with the projector off.

Fingers crossed I get it back in a couple weeks... it will make it easier to tolerate the COVID-19 lockdown period once I get it back! Lol.

Well..........I thought I would go and give it a try again. I set up my sim to have 13ft tee to screen. 8ft M+ to tee. Mevo was level with the hitting surface. No lights except for a LED spot on tee.
I went, SW, 9 iron, 6 iron, Hybrid, Driver. SW was fine and could easily create a left or right spin axis. Same thing for 9 iron. Matched the ST fairly well.
After doing this procedure a few times and looking at the data, I’m starting to see a pattern. Short and mid range irons are relatively fine. As you move up to longer clubs the spin axis slowly starts to dominate to the right. The 6 iron had an axis of 9.6R, 7.2R, 3.0L, 7R, 1.5R. Where as the ST was mostly left or 0 but just by a little. Moved to Hybrid and then the bias started to become stronger to the right again. M+ was 17.8R, 8.4R, 11.4R, 5.8R, 10.1R. ST 1.5R, 3.5L, 0, 0, 1.8L. Move to the driver and the bias to the right is huge again. I’m not sure what it means but there is definitely a pattern with my unit.
I hit three shots at the outdoor range with my driver (my daughter was practicing) and my shots match the ST very well. It was cool and they are range balls. I put those on the spreadsheet. Just an indicator for how I hit the ball. Dead straight all day, just not far. Lol.
I wish there was a way to export FS app data. It’s a pain scrolling through the app to look and retrieve data. Skytrak is much much better in that regards.

Yes. I have emailed support with the issue and data, started on Saturday, Monday and another today. I have not heard back from them, but considering what is going on in this world I don’t expect them to as my issues are not important. All in good time. I’m just trying to do my do diligence.

I had a real frustrating night. Drivers were going dead left with hook spin launching at about 8*. Drivers that went straight were launching at 20* or more. Ball speeds were all over the place 145-165 mph. This was all within E6.

I tried something today to see if it would make a difference. Short to mid irons seem to be decent numbers with Mevo+. So I hit a few shots with the driver and ended up with massive right spin axis (45 deg) and then I selected 9 iron and continued to hit a using the driver. The axis was reduced to single digit and was showing left and right. Crazy numbers though including launch angle and carry. I then selected driver again in the FS app and continued to hit driver and the extreme right axis returned. Not really sure what that means, but it hopefully helps FS understand better.
I did hear back from FS support but they just asked a few questions. One of them was firmware level which was not the level they showed me but there seems to be no way to update it through settings. I have sent them all the data and testing I have done including environmental photos. Hopefully they come up with something.
