    Mevo+ spin numbers

Hi all, I just got a mevo+ and have been testing over the last couple days with the flightscope app on android. Carry and shot shape seems about right with what I see on course, but backspin numbers seem off. I cannot get anything to spin over 5500 rpm. I have never really been fitted or used trackman or GC quad to know my numbers, but I do play to a 5 and generally have not worried about the details. However these numbers seem really low to published data online. My 7 iron (33 degrees) spins around 4200 (145 carry) lob wedge 5500 and 6 iron 3800. I cannot verify outdoor due to climate, so thought I would get some opinions.

My indoor setup is 10 ft to screen 8 feet to ball. I would say about 10% of spin are italicized. I have wrapped all metal in aluminum mesh screen. I have messed with distances and height of the unit, lights on/off. I also do feel I have indoor swing syndrome as my ceiling height is plenty tall. My mat does not seem to be an issue as I can get about the same numbers on pured and slight thin/fat shots. I manually set the weather and altitude also. I have only used on battery.

Any idea what is happening? Is the unit malfunctioning?

A few easy things to rule out:

    - I’m assuming you’re using a decent ball
    - Try hitting irons off a tee to ensure no mat interaction
    - given you referenced italics I’m assuming you’re using metal dots (didn’t see you explicitly reference)

If you’re picking wedges clean off a tee with a metal dot on a premium ball and seeing measured spin super low something is off (my wedges spin at 10k when measured every time unless massively fat). Once you hit it even a bit fat (even such that it feels ok depending on what may you have) all bets are off and I found slightly heavy was my indoor miss for quite awhile.

Hard to say if the unit is the issue...a few questions for would be
      Are you using the “dot”?
What type of mat are you hitting on?
What kind of balls are you using?
Do you get what seem to be correct distance for you through the bag?
How are the rest of your numbers, such as launch angle?
It would also be helpful if you post some pictures of your set up. There are a lot of knowledgeable be on this forum that might be able to spot something in your set up that might be an issue. (See one the knowledgeable people answered before I did)

I had this same problem. Turned out I just needed to clean my clubs
I do get a lot of estimated spin though and this is something FS should be releasing a patch for soon.

Gresh12 I have not tried premium balls yet, though I do typically play a maxfli tour ball except as season bookends. I had been testing with a TM burner and maxfli softfli with metal dot. I mention itallics because I had a cfl bulb in range which caused many more estimated reads/wonky distances. I do not use tees on course for mid to short irons, but I will give it a go. I have noticed I am a little heavier on the mat vs grass and tend to miss a lot on the toe vs on the course.

I did test 4 iron and 3wood in addition to the 6,7 and wedge and carry distance and shot shape matched up to on course play. Like spin I am not sure what my LA is from more sophisticated LMs. Comparibly for my SS, the LA appears high (23 vs ideal 19) along with half spin, yet my carry/ballspeed is identical to one with a lower LA/ higher spin. Aoa is around -2 and max height is 75-80 ft which seems ideal. I also use players irons vs players distance or general gi irons, so it is not like I am using "low spin" irons

Since I have no point of reference outside carry and shot shape which is accurate through the bag, maybe these numbers are "correct?" I will post a pic of my setup after hitting a tour ball.

Ball makes a big difference. I bought some second hand Bridgestone E6 balls last year because they were cheap and plugs aren’t uncommon where I play in the winter.

My SW spins at 10-11k with a Pro-V1 and I played around with the E6’s in my sim (I had Skytrack at that time) and they were spinning at 5k at first (clean wedge face) then dropped to close to 3k after about 10-15 shots. I looked at the face and there was a film on it from the ball (or whatever the second hand ball place used to clean them). Cleaned face of the film and back up to 5k, cleaned face and hit Pro-V1 back over 10k immediately.

A non premium ball will spin a lot less than a premium ball. Then add in almost any mat knocks a bit of spin off (some a lot) compared to grass. I’d guess your unit isn’t off on many of the ones it reads spin.

I also only suggest trying off a tee to limit mat interaction further. Has nothing to do with if you use a tee on a par 3 I’m just suggesting you get the mat out of the occasion.

Probably goes without saying but use same quality of balls in the sim you play. Practicing with a premium ball to get spin that better compares to “tour norms” won’t help if you then go play something that spins way less on the course as all your distances will be way different.

I would have to say since you have just gotten the mevo+ and your carry numbers seem accurate perhaps the spin numbers are as well. Have you tried the FS trajectory optimizer yet?
FlightScope's Trajectory Optimizer is a golf ball flight trajectory program. The program will plot the flight of the ball in real time after the user's input of the initial launch conditions of the golf ball. Based on scientific algorithms, FlightScope's Trajectory Optimizer will help you find your optimal ball flight trajectory to add distance to your golf shots.

Put your numbers from the mevo+ in and look at the results then change the spin and see what you get.

I've noticed lower spin numbers as well. My 7 iron never gets over 6k spin so I compared it with a quad and found that the spin numbers were correct. I typically play a draw and found that my path combined with a closed face at impact is the culprit. The Mevo+ doesn't really show path or clubface angles so I'm glad I double checked with another lm. What I did find was that the angle of decent on the Mevo was almost double what the quad showed.

Not to hijack the thread… but what causes the spin numbers when using FS Golf app to be italicized?

Yes, I’ve got the metal dot on the ball, always pointing toward the net, and about a third of my spin numbers are estimated.

is That something to be worried about?

Use the search function for “italicized” in the Flightscope forum and you will find a lot of information on it
