  • Do you need the dot? You decide.

Today I was messing with my driver and decided to check something out. I took 2 brand new balls, a Callaway supersoft and a Titleist avx with no dot and hit 15 shots, all the spin numbers were in the 4000’s and italicized. I then cleaned the balls and applied the mevo dots and hit 15 more shots. 12 out of the 15 shots the spin was in the 2000’s, the other 3 in the 3000’s and none were italicized. I then cleaned the balls again and replaced the mevo dot with metal tape and hit another series of shots with mixed results. Interestingly enough on the 3rd series with the homemade dot 3 shots did not register. Here are the screenshots of each series of shots.

I've had a similar experience. I bought some metal dots on eBay, and far more shots had spin estimated with the eBay dots compared to the Flightscope dots. It improved some by putting 2-3 layers of eBay dots on.. they even feel thinner than the flightscope dots. I would buy from flightscope if they didn't charge so much for shipping.. sheesh! Put a .50 cent stamp on and mail them in an envelope!

What does Flightscope charge for shipping?

They ship them UPS.. so to ship to WI, its like $15.. rediculous for something that can fit in an envelope and be mailed first class.

Mine came regular mail, and it was at least $15. Crazy for a $30 purchase.

Shankz, did you notice a difference in any other ball data such as spin axis accuracy? Have you done the same test with say a 7 iron and wedge? Thanks for the information.

Bubba, Yesterday was the first time I tried this out. If I get a chance today I will try it with some other clubs.

Does anyone know or can anyone measure the thickness of the mevo dots? I am wondering if it’s the thickness of the dot or what the dot is made that might be causing the difference. My tape is aluminum tape from the local hardware store. The label does not state the thickness of it but it does seem thinner so perhaps doubling or tripling it up would help. Since I hit into a net the stickers get chewed up quite a bit. The mevo dots seem to get knocked off more easily than aluminum tape dots so I am trying to find a solution to my situation.

Ok I got out and hit a series of shots with a 7i and came up with pretty much the same results as with the driver. All shots with “no dots” had estimated spin numbers in the 6000 range. With the “mevo dot” spin numbers were consistently inconsistent which matches my swing and 1 shot was missed which I believe was not read because it was pulled to far left. The “homemade” dot was about the same with 2 shots having estimated spin numbers and 2 shots missed one was a pull but the other was a good hit. The 4th series of shots I doubled up the thickness of the “homemade dot”, only had one shot with estimated spin which was a chunk shot and no missed shot.

I did similar testing with driver and for sure the dots made a huge difference in reducing spin. Without the dot spin was always in the upper 3000 to low 4000 range. Put the dot on and spin was down in the 2000 range with some getting as low as 1600 rpms. I didn't find much difference between dot vs no dot on my irons. If I wanted to extend the life of my dots I may be tempted to only use them for driver and use a non dot ball for everything else. But I have a par2pro SQ screen and have had no issues with dots coming off or excessive wear so I'll just keep using the dots for all shots unless FS comes out with a patch that can reduce the spin numbers on driver without a dot.

I knew something was up with spin numbers on driver because I had been fit for a driver at Club Champion and knew my numbers really well. Either that or I was about to take that super expensive shaft back to Club Champion and figure out what the heck was going on. Put the dot on the ball and all is well now. Just use the dot, it works.

Flightscope needs to do something about the shipping cost. I forget the number but I’m in Canada and the shipping cost was more than the dots for me. I figured I’d order a few thousand to make the shipping fee seem less painful and never run out but they added a full shipping fee to each “unit” so I didn’t place it.

Thankfully my fitter had tons for his Trackman so he sold me some at his cost.

The dots make a big difference on the $25k Trackman so it doesn’t shock me they help the $2k unit.

I knew the dots made a difference but it’s a night and day difference. And I did not know till this evening that Trackman needs the dots.

                A little question,
how do you know that it is a calculated or estimated data? where can you see it?

Estimated is italicized. Calculated is not, I believe.

Noob is correct, the italicized spin numbers are estimated. According FS support the number is estimated because the actual number was not read.

Quick question, how much space did you have to the screen/net? I still got italized measurements with 10’ of ball flight even with the metallic dot. Thx

It’s about 11 ft. to my net from the ball.
