  • FS App and Range Ball setting

So, I thought using "range ball" setting would cause my distance/ball speed to decrease, however, I gained about 20 yds using Range ball setting. Is this normal? Spin and launch stayed about the same, but ball speed and carry increased.

Correct, I think it is an attempt by all LM manufacturers to predict range ball characteristics given a lot of courses or ranges use a limited flight ball or one that has a very hard outer cover but a softer inner core for durability.

Opposed to a premium ball that uses a harder inner core and softer outer cover which usually correlates to higher ball speeds given an average swing speed.

You should find longer distances on the range ball setting especially if the range ball you are using does not fit the description of a "normal" limited flight or lower quality range ball.

Range balls don't perform as well as a premium ball so it's natural that you would see a boost. It's their attempt to normalize the data with a ball that someone would use on the course.

I recently asked customer support about this as I've seen up to +30 yards with my 8 iron using a range ball mode. This was the response I received.

The option to use the range ball really depends on the quality of the range ball. If they are new and in good condition I found that the numbers were pretty similar on mid to shorter clubs compared to a standard golf ball. The results were also dependent on the quality of the strike/shot as well.

The range ball setting is designed for "limited flight" range balls, which due to their construction, have less speed and spin off the clubface than all other ball types.

That said, I would also use the range ball setting if I get a basket of normal range or standard balls that have been used for some time. I would also use it if I'm indoor at a simulator that requires me to use their balls, and those balls are a bit beat up.

I would never use range ball setting when using my own balls with dots or RCT balls.

If you're getting results short of what you see on the course with dotted gamers or RCT balls, you need to look at:
          - indoor swing syndrome
          - metal objects or fans or other possible sources of interference with the radar
          - increasing ball flight distance
          - replacing the RCT with dotted gamers (I seem to get a lot of double spin reads with the RCT)
