GC2 Crazy spin (especially side spin) on chips

    Hi Everyone,

First post here and I must say I'm really impressed by all the info on this forum! So much helpful stuff.

Unfortunately I'm not seeing anything regarding the issue that I'm experiencing... If it's there and I'm just missing it then please forgive the repeat post.

    Anyways, here goes -

I recently purchased a used GC2 and the numbers seem pretty good (reasonable and as expected) for MOST shots, but once I started trying chip shots I noticed that the spin numbers on these shots only is ABSURD (see attached pictures). In particular, the side spin registered is crazy (backspin too, but not by nearly as large of a margin).

I've tried the latest firmware version (4.0.0.15) as well as version 3.5.1.0. I've also tried placing the GC2 at different heights above the mat, different lighting, different locations for the GC2 (including a completely different room), different shoes, and different wedges. None of this made a difference.

I contacted foresight and was told that this occurs when the flash is failing. But before I drop a lot of money registering the unit with Foresight and buying a new flash I thought I'd ask the forum... Has anyone ever heard of or experienced this problem? If so, was the flash at fault or something else?

    Thanks!
    TK

It could be the flash. Buy one from Andy here. They are cheap. Also try differ nt wedges in case something on the wedge is causing it

      Thanks for the advice.

I tried 4 different types of wedges and got similar results to the ones shown in my photos.

        TK , two things:

        1) flash
        2) reflection off of the hozzle of your wedges.

You can verify if it's a reflection issue by taking a black magic marker and coloring your hozzle ....

this is of course for chrome / satin wedges.

I get the same thing on my gc2. Had the same thing on my last gc2 and same thing on the new one with superflash. I have black md3 wedges so def not hosel reflection. Doesn't affect ball flight so i don't worry about it. It also doesnt do it with anything besides wedges so i doubt its a flash thing.

Really appreciate the responses. Nice to know that it's probably not due to the flash or wedges. However, I have to disagree that it doesn't affect the ball flight. Even on a 30 yard shot, I believe a 5-9k side spin will still cause noticeable curve. And this side spin with the 6k backspin (actual backspin probably in the 2-4k range on these shots) will cause way different green interaction.

Anyone besides erikh5014 and me that had/has this issue with their GC2? Any further ideas regarding causes and/or solutions?

I would really like to use this for sim golf, but hard to play when chips are so inaccurate. Wouldn't have expected this from such an expensive piece of equipment that's supposed to be +/- 50 rpm... don't mean to sound too negative, just frustrated.

I've never seen that on mine. I wonder if it could be caused by the ball? Also wonder if you get the same thing when set to total spin/spin axis mode (a strange bug in their coordinate conversion)? Are you using a case, if so try without it. Have you tried different ball positions? Make sure the unit is fully opened I've had strange readings when I accidently didn't have it fully open. Also make sure it's the correct height relative to the mat. Finally are you *sure* it isnt actually happening. ..some mats and swings can produce pretty extreme results. If it is bad readings from the unit I would think flash is the most likely culprit.

I've never seen this either. I'd suggest you load/reload the latest firmware from the Foresight website.

Aside from that many people have used wedges for short pitches with no problems. Remember the GC2 makes multiple flashes from 7 to 12 or so with the higher number for slower ball speeds like putts and chips. Try moving the ball position around as possibly you are having the later flashes out of frame.

I would also try hitting off of a tee. I am not familiar with your mat, but if you are swinging softly for a pitch shot and hit the mat first with with either the toe or the heel, the mat could be pulling the club face way open or closed as you hit the ball. I used to have a CCE mat and those fibers could really grab the club. You wouldn't necessarily see this as much on full swings because the club doesn't have as much time to rotate since you are swinging hard.

i agree some mats have know forgiveness and really affect the way the club comes through the shot it may feel like a good shot but may twist

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far.

I've tried multiple types of clean golf balls. Tried total spin + axis. I do have a case, but have tried extensively with and without. Experimented with moving the ball around to all positions within the hitting area. Also double checked that the unit is fully open (it was). Experimented with a number of heights relative to the mat between level and a couple inches above. I've also switched between 3.5.1.0 and 4.0.0.15 multiple times.

None of the above remedied the issue.

I'd be EXTREMELY surprised if the readings were legit. I feel like it would be very hard (damn near impossible) to legitimately put 5.8k side spin on a 25mph chip or 8.3k side spin on a 41 mph chip, right? Also, I've used a friend's GC2 on the exact same mat and never seen anything near this.

I'll try teeing the ball up and then chipping it to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks again and please let me know if you think of any further ideas.

Unfortunately teeing it up yielded the same strange results even when not touching the mat with the club. At this point I'm planning to try a new flash, and if that doesn't solve it then I think I'll have to register with Foresight and send it in.

One more thing that hasn't been mentioned...have you tried resetting the unit?

I just sent mine in. No transfer fee forced on me. Name registered on both HMT and gc2 and repair/calibrated and sent back. Not free, but no $500 fee charged. Never mentioned.

I didn't say anything of course.

Were you getting bad spin readings? Is it better now that foresight calibrated?

Nice, thanks for the heads up. Glad that worked out for you. Hopefully I get that lucky too.
