  • FR1 to FSX2020 worth it for $500

I’ve seen some talk here but was curious if folks thought that upgrading from FR1 to FSX2020 was worth $500

I'm also wondering if I have basically all of the FR1 courses and I upgrade, how many FSX Courses will I get.

    Thanks

I'm wondering the same thing. I just sold my gc2 but I'm thinking of trading dongle in for FSX2020. I called foresight and asked about upgrading yesterday. He couldn't answer my questions and is going to call me back today hopefully.

I just upgraded from FR1 to FSX2020. For me it was worth the upgrade, and I did not have to return my FR1 dongle (I still have it). At the PGA Show, they were asking $1,750 for the upgrade so $500 is a significant discount. I use Windows 10 and FR1 (while it works on V1.30) is not the best - e.g. cannot go full screen, etc., and the FR1 graphics are original Nintendo video game looking given its age. You also get the Playgrounds/carnival game area software with the 2020 upgrade which my kids and wife seem to like. I am still learning the new options, set-up, etc. but so far I am definitely not regretting the spend. At $1,750, I'd likely not be overly impressed but at $500 it was an easy choice for me. It also brings me up to date re: Windows 10 software in the process. How many more updates to Windows 10 before FR1 does not work at all.... That might be a negative outlook but for $500, I know I will not have any Windows issues for sometime to come (well hopefully anyway)! So far, I am happy with the upgrade.

How did you process the upgrade, from the Foresight website directly? What FR1 information did they need from you to upgrade?

Yes, I did it directly on Foresight's website.
      Here is the link:

They asked for the FR1 dongle's serial number (etched onto the metal part of the USB dongle). I had a tough time reading the dongle S/N, but I took a picture on my phone and enlarged it - was able to read all of the alpha-characters. Took Foresight about a day to email me the download link, activation code, etc. Everything worked well - easy!

No reason he wouldn't be able to play fr1 courses. Just need the security dongle. If they don't require it sent back what a deal.

I agree with Wizard of Coz - I would assume you could still play FR1 courses with the dongle (using the FR1 1.3 software). I actually do not play any of the FR1 courses, or even the 4-5 which come with FSX2020. TGC 2019 is superior (IMHO) that I have never played more than 1 hole on FR1 or FSX then almost immediately reverted back to TGC. Graphics on TGC 2019 are just better in so many ways - some of the new Lidar courses are just beautfiul! The first bounce on TGC 2019 is a bit of an issue but it is easy for me to look beyond that flaw. With that said, I have not played some of the upgraded FSX courses (Pebble or St. Andrews) so please take note of that as well - I have heard those are very well done!

Now that we're a fair amount of time since your upgrades Carl/Wizard... just wanted to check that there's still no request from Foresight for the dongle or additional charges?

So, I need some guidance with making this same transition. I am currently using FR1 V.1.271 on a Windows 8.1 system. I have been using this for years. I have not made any updates because it has worked perfectly and I didn't want to ruin that.

So now this deal comes along that seems to be worthwhile. I understand that FSX 2020 will only run with Windows 10 so I would need to upgrade from 8.1. One of my questions is will this make any changes to the functionality of my FR1 at all? I see a mention above of "cannot go full screen". I run my simulator with an Optoma projector on a 4:3 screen.

I have sat on the fence all month and now I have to make a decision. Any input would be very much appreciated.

Personally, I upgraded. $500 seems like a no brainer to me. They haven't asked for my Fr1 dongle and I got the fsx same day. I just can't figure out how to use it. Do I need my gc2 back?

So, according to Foresight, FSX 2020 works well with Windows 8.1 as well as Windows 10. Is anyone out there besides me still using 8.1? I never made the switch to 10 because everything with FR1 works perfectly and I didn't want to foul that up.

How many courses come with the upgrade? Can we choose which courses?

Here are the courses which come as part of the upgrade. You get Foresight Playgrounds as well (kids games, etc.). And, you cannot choose the courses, as far as I am aware.

Standard FSX2020 courses (included with upgrade)
Blue Bayou Golf and Fishing Club
            Broken Tree
            Linfield National
            Willow Crest Golf Club
