Camera for FSX

I have the same webcam (Logitech c920)as ks-man but I can not get my swing to record in FSX. Any ideas?

Is there a better camera option? It is kinda dark in my setup. Maybe I need some better lighting before I worry about a camera.

I'm not sure if 30fps is fast enough as I can barely see my hand position in my downswing - which is one of the things I'd like to see. My downswing is over in about 2 frames, and they're very blurry.

I was was speaking to Colin at Foresight the other day about a couple of issues I have with FSX. When he gets back to me, I'll mention choosing a resolution.
I think there more interested in selling their high speed camera at $900 than fixing it for other cameras though.

Logitech just came out with a 4K webcam @ 30 fps, 1080p @ 60 fps and 720p @ 90 fps. However it doesn't have H.264 encoding, so don't know if FSX can read the output. Also, from p3eps trial with the c922, it seems fsx will default to 1080p, so you might not be able to use the 4K option any way

Another interesting camera is the sony rx100 that shoots 960 FPS at 720 x 576 resolution. However, no idea if it works with FSX (probably doesn't)

FSX will only see the camera's default resolution. On most cameras it's the highest possible - which is usually @ 30fps.

Today I received a cheap Chinese camera, that I had specifically made for me to be 640x480 @ 100fps as it's default resolution.
FSX now sees it as a 100fps camera, and it seems to be pretty smooth when I play back at quarter speed.
The camera cost me £40, which is less than half the price of the Logitech C922.
The resolution isn't the highest, but it's clear enough for me to see my swing.

There's hardly any techical information on the page listing, how did you know the camera was going to work?

So does the camera need to have H.264 encoding to work with FSX or does the output just need to be MJPEG? Thats the only reason i can think why the pseye doesn't work with FSX.

Why didn't you get them to set it up at its full 120fps?

Did you use the 4mm lens?

How dark is the image, can you post screenshots?

The idea that an unkown/half assembled chinese brand would work with FSX would never have even crossed my mind, gutsy purchase.

Thanks p3eps. I contacted the seller and they had me purchase item 222257954832 since it is already in a case. I made a note during checkout to ship with the 2.1mm lens instead of the 3.6mm in the listing. I also asked them to set the default to 640 x 480 @120 fps. Total was $45.99. I'll let you know when it arrives in a month or so if it works. :-)

If your camera only does 100 fps like the others then you should get them to set it to 100 fps like p3 did. Otherwise you'll find it plays back at the wrong speed.

But if they are going to ship you one that actually does 120 fps then what you did is fine.

Firstly, they won't set the camera to 120fps. They can't!
I've had the standard camera in the listing for a couple of months now, and asked them about getting it to default to 120fps. After several emails back and forth they said they could make me one (I assume they just change a setting somewhere that I don't have access to). Since it was so cheap, I agreed to purchase another.
Queena (who was the contact) then came back to me and advised that they could only do 100fps - and was that OK. I said that was fine, and paid for it via PayPal using the above link. I had to put a note in the purchase stating that I wanted 640 x 480 @ 100fps. I then asked about getting a housing for it - as my original one was just a PCB. I think it cost me £3 extra.

The camera arrived yesterday, and I had a brief shot of it last night. FSX sees it as 100fps and it's much smoother when watching the half / quarter speed replays. The image quality is decent - but it's only at 640 x 480 - so looks a little bit grainy. It's good enough for me to analyse my swing. I just wish FSX gave me the ability to skim through the video rather than just play at normal / half / quarter speed. It'd be nice to be able to skip frame by frame.

I don't know if I'll get a chance tonight, but I'll post a video in the next couple of days of what it looks like for anyone that's interested.

This may have been covered elsewhere, but has anyone tried a GoPro?

From what i understand, you might be able to do it with 3rd party drivers to make a gopro into a webcam, but the resolution is low and the video laggy. The other option is to hook the gopro to a capture card through hdmi which then gives you a usable live output, but when you combine a gopro which cost $199 and a capture card that cost $150, you're not getting a cost effective solution.

I haven't had much time to play with this, but here's a wee photo of me taking a picture of my screen! As you can see, the brightness looks good and the picture looks decent enough. Plus, FSX indicates it's getting 100fps (jumps about 98-100 all the time).
That's not the final position for the camera either... it'll be straight when I fix it up properly!!

Sorry guys... I've been stuck offshore for the last week with no computer access.
Here is a screenshot from a video that I downloaded off FSX Live. The brightness seems pretty good to me, Obviously the resolution isn't great, but it's good enough for me to see my hands / wrists / hips etc.
Also... the camera still isn't in its final resting place! I've just got it clamped in a vice for the time being until I get a spare bit of time to permanently fix it to my shelving. I'll make sure it's straight then!!

P3eps, The picture above seems to show transition to downswing where club/body is mostly stationary. It would be more useful to see the camera's capabilities when club/body is at impact position.
