  • Only 4500 Backspin with 120mph ballspeed, 16* launch angle 7 iron?

I've been complaining about my irons not sticking on greens well in TGC, and I think it may be my GC2 not reading backspin correctly. How is it even possible to hit that low spin with a 7 iron? The mat can't be the issue because these are numbers with the ball tee'd up and me hammering down on it. I've tried every kind of ball you can think of, most around 4500ish, some are lower, and I might get the odd shot closer to 5000 if the stars align.

My GC2 is an old model 1100 serial number, using the latest firmware. It seems to read everything else fine, all my distances and launch angles are spot on but something isn't adding up here for backspin.

Could my flash be going? It doesn't miss a shot ever, even the slowest of chips and putts are read perfectly. I did the re-calibration tool but to no avail.

what about 8-iron? 6-iron? Given how easy it is to produce some data with the shot recording, can you take 10 shots with each and then we can look at the actual results on your profile page.

All my numbers are down across the board. My brand new 48* pitching wedge is lucky to get 7500 backspin with 100mph ball speed.

I don't have any GC2 software, only TGC, but I still could probably put something together.

Are you grooves worn? Lots of people tend to practice on the range with their 7 irons so that is just a thought. I agree with Thinman that it might be good to post data for a variety of irons. Usually, you get roughly 1000 * iron # of backspin (4 iron = 4000 rpm, 7 iron = 7000 rpm). If you lose 1000 per club, your 4 iron would only have 1500 rpm, which is lower than most people can hit a driver.

I plugged your numbers into flightscope trajectory optimizer:
    120mph, 16*, 4500 rpm should carry 180 yards.

Typical backspin with a 7 iron is 7000.
    120mph, 16*, 7000 rpm should carry 172 yards

Do you think your carry in real life is closer to 172 or 180 yards?

I do tend to hit longer rather than shorter. Maybe its just my swing mechanics is not built for spin.

One thing I forgot to add was I brought this same 7i to my local golf town to hit on their GC2 and compare with two other brand new 7i's. I tapped my club just as they tape theirs so I was testing on the same conditions. My taped 7i was doing 5000-6000 backspin hitting off their mat, not tee'd up. The other 2 7 irons I was testing were also in this same range of 5000 to 6000.

These were numbers outputted on their software, not on the GC2 itself as they had it plugged in.

So even with taped club face, their GC2 was showing higher backspin, unless they were boosted.

Oh, I was actually referring to the new site stats. Should be able to just turn on shot recording and hit the mthunt range and we will be able to see the results. Here is the thread explaining how to set it up. http://golfsimulatorforum.com/forum/...ment-site-beta

Avg backspin from my 4 iron is low 2000s. I had one pro vx tee'd up do 3000 with a 135mph ballspeed. That was the highest I could get out of it.

Could a faulty flash module be the culprit?

Ok I went to golftown with my 7i and a ball I consistently hit 4500-5000 backspin with on my GC2 and sure enough, same numbers there. So I guess its a combination of my strong lofted clubs (7i is 31* which is a 6 for most other sets), plus my clubs are 7 years old so I'm sure the the grooves don't have the same bite.

Regardless, I'm happy to learn it's not my GC2

With clean dry balls and clubface the grooves have little to do with spin. They are there for the same reason street tires have grooves i.e. to keep the wet slippery stuff off the contact patch. Actually no grooves would give better club ball friction similar to the way dry race tires have greater traction then street tires even if manufactured with the same rubber compound.

I'd check the actual loft of the club in a quality loft/lie gauge. After seven years of hard hitting the loft has probably changed some especially if they are forged or soft stainless steel like 304.
