Wonder what the marketing strategy for this was? Doesn't seem to make sense based on the price against the current competition, usage for LH/RH play, continued interaction with a screen attached to the unit on the ground, still needing a true PC to connect to some 3rd party software. Don't see anyone really taking that thing to a range more than once. I also don't see many spending that kind of money to hit balls into a net to get the usage out of a self contained piece of hardware. If you're going to get a projector and need a computer to connect to some 3rd party software solutions, there are other hardware solutions that are priced better.

I agree wbond. It makes no sense. I haven’t seen putting on it yet. It’s a massive unit! The screen is not necessary. You can buy a cheap iPad or tablet on a tripod and not have to bend over every time you touch the screen. I don’t think having it all in one is a good idea. Thinking this will be a win for Garmin. Near GC4 levels of accuracy and data for less than a GC3. Play simulated golf (on Home Tee Hero) without the need for a separate computer. If you want other 3rd party software you’ll be able to do it - likely without much (any?) additional sub costs.
Slightly less portable than a GC3 / 4 but unless you really like FSX software I’d lean towards this first based on what I’ve seen so far.
That said if they came out with an R30 at $1500 less I think it would do even better.

Definitely a small market for GC4s. This is 1/3-1/4 the price though. It’s chasing GC3 / Eye Mini market share. If you are looking for a floor based unit that has all the data on offer in the R50 (w no marked up balls no less) looks hard to beat currently.

I suppose that’s true Dan13. Of course there needs to be testing to verify accuracy. At this point Foresight is still the gold standard for indoor photo metric devices. This will eat into that market as you say.

It will be interesting to see if they get accuracy with a one dot system. Foresight is usually considered the standard and they've been doing the camera system for quite some time and still use multiple stickers to get the accuracy vs what gets reported with one sticker.

I was amazed at the number of sudden YouTube videos suddenly appearing yesterday (am in UK). They obviously sent units out to all the channels and only allowed them to post at a certain point in time. The R50 was something hinted at over the last years. I think everyone was hoping Garmin was going to be coming out with a much better replacement for the R10 with a cameras about this time of year instead of something in this price range. As others have said the screen is just a gimmick, too small to see and you have to bend down or squat to see it. Built in weak computer for simulation not a good idea as limits future use.
Given the trend for good ball data and club data at much lower price points, as technology advances and can do more at lower price points, It goes against this trend. It has 3 cameras so on a camera basis alone, as people have said, is in the same league as a GC3/BLP. Cannot see it taking off to any real degree, at best, it might force foresight etc to change their pricing structure and package offering. The built in screen and tablet size computer power, as some have said, is not something amazing as most seem to be saying on YouTube (they probably are influenced also by receiving a free one).
On the videos they are also saying this is the best thing released this year. Some of the comments against the videos are people saying that Square golf unit was the most important unit released this year and not this. I would agree with that. Square golf is meeting a trend and our expectation: more for less.

You are 100% correct Wilson. The you tube videos were definitely calculated. Smart marketing scheme by Garmin to have them all come out on the same day. Makes the launch look bigger!!!
I'm not a fan of the all in one. The screen is ok but I would prefer an iPad on a tripod at my height. Lower back and knee pain if you keep bending down over time.
The Garmin R50 doesn't have enough metrics to compete against the GC Quad. Correct me if I am wrong but it doesn't have dynamic loft, spin loft, face impact, liet etc I think it completes against the GC3/BLP and Eye Mini with added face angle.
I agree with you to that the Square golf is a more important unit given its price point. I suspect Square will come out with a more expensive unit at say $1800 with added club data and non marked balls etc. Garmin may have missed that boat which folks were waiting for.Last edited by Bubba22; 11-14-2024, 01:06 AM.

Uneeker made the same pricing mistakes on the release of the Eye mini. From memory it was near about $4500. they then discounted to $3300 for a period and eventually came out with the Mini light at $2700 (now original mini is way up in price again after lunch of light). They then changed their subscriptions to include golf course at lower price point also. Everything is going to more for less. I suspect it will not be long before the price of the R50 comes down drastically due to lack of sales.

Hard for me to voice an opinion on pricing without getting more info on the specs and more info on comparative accuracy, but if it compares with a GC3 that is $7k list, vs R50 $5k. In the aviation world Garmin makes top notch touch screens and graphic displays, to extreme reliability standards.

Pretty new this thing, but it looks promising except for the price
.
A couple of thoughts/questions:
* Is the output, via HDMI, at 1080P or can it deliver 4K?
* * In there specification it says that the HDMI-cable should handle at least 1080P.
* What is the USB-C port for? Connecting to external PC to run GSPro/E6/etc?
* Can you connect an iPad? for playing E6?
* If you connect a 3rd party. like GSPro, will the R50 display ball and club data or will it just be black?
* How correct is the chipping/putting part? Most review says the longer shot is accurate.
* There is a subscription at $99/year. What do you get with this, only Home Tee Hore courses? Can you still use the practice part without the subscription?
* No speaker?
* * Somewhere its said you could connect to an external speaker via Bluetooth.Last edited by GGoldwin; 11-14-2024, 11:22 AM.
