  • Greens and chipping

Kind of a two in one here...

What are folks successful methods of chipping with a R motion. I've tried real balls when set to almost golf balls. The two foot back swing. And I even tried swearing at it.... None seem to have worked.

Some of the greens in the lite version seem pointlessly ridiculous. It can not be that on some you can hit the front with 8i to PW and they disappear off the back.
Does anyone know if there a way that this can be modified (along with green speed) in the lite or paid for versions?

    Thanks in advance

Totally agree the greens are ridiculous. Way too fast and will not hold. It’s not just the chipping you can hit an iron on the front of the green and have it roll 50 60 feet off the back. Don’t know why the course designers set the greens up for a pro type golfer when 99% of the people playing these courses are amateurs. Wish R Motion had move to TGC 2019 where you can set the green speed and softness.

An example hit an iron onto a green it ran 60 feet across the green and off the back. I always set gimmies to on the green. Putting is ridiculously fast. Before turning on gimmies I would 3,4,5 putt greens where in actual golf I may 3 putt 1 or 2 greens in a round but can't remember any 4,5 putts. Chipping is a total feel thing. I find a sand or lob wedge works best for me.

I cannot confirm this for every single one of the 15 courses.
Especially with Little Brook Manor and Black Brook Manor you shouldn't have these problems on the greens. Balls are stopping really quickly there.

Of course there are much more demanding courses like Pinehurst #2 (Blue Tees), where you - without a doubt - have to let the ball come up on the front side of the green or even on the last metres of the fairway. Otherwise you dont have a chance the ball stays on that green.

Chipping: it is a thing of testing different techniques and a "feeling issue".
In another topic I have compared the real chipping distances to the TGC distances and there you can see chipping within a carry ball flight of ~5 meters is possible, but nothing below I think.
It is crucial that your backswing is far enough and that the contact with the ball is noticeable for the sensor. Don't forget this still is a very cheap kind of simulator / Launch Monitor on the market...

There is a way to impact green speeds. There are settings in the TGC "config" file that you can edit.

The "config" file should be located at:

      C:\ProgramData\ProTee United\TGC Simulator\TGCSim_Data\Server\server_Data

You can edit the file under the following section to have some impact on greens.

      [Course Configuration]
      Green Stimp=5
      Green Firmness=5
      Green Speed=5

        That's brilliant thank you.

Presumably the lower the firmness number the more receptive they are?

Mine said 2 and Flathead currently is anything but receptive. Which is a pity as a lot of it reminds me of my home course, including the 150 island green. I'll come to that later..

I'll change them to yours and see what happens tomorrow.

Looking in that config file I can see the annoying user name. Somehow I managed to set mine to "first name" insert last name. Would changing it there do bad things?

(I also see TGC Online Shot recording sounds intriguing...)

(The first home hole, generally between 140 and 165 and always windy, you could be playing a 5i or 6i to carry 130 on to the island some days.

When things get back to normal and if anyone's passing London stop for a few holes I'd be happy to host.)

That seemed to work thanks 👍

Chipping in this is still a dark art though. If there's a pattern to what works and what doesn't I've not spotted it...

A bit like the "I'm taking your handicap, putting a pin in that, and I'm going to never give you shots on holes". What the actual crazy f... Is that about?

The settings work together. I personally use the following:

            Green Stimp=6
            Green Firmness=1
            Green Speed=3

The proper username is needed to for the shot recording to work correctly on the TGC Tour.
The shot recording is only used for the TGC Tour. Although, once it is active you can track the stats of all your shots whether on Tour or not. The full version iv TGC is required for this to work.

I guess the chipping is hit or miss for players. I generally don't have an issue with short putts or chips. I do always use a real ball for these.

On the chipping nearly nothing works for me. I've set it to and use almost golf balls for chipping and putting I use a real ball.

For a chip I've got to take the shot about seven times and even some putts take a couple of goes.

Chipping for me is a big part of my real game and I generally would expect to be within a couple of feet.

I'll preserve, but as that it is it's proving a block on upgrading to play tournaments.

On the handicaps if I input my real handicap is there a reason why it doesn't give me shots but add them ?!?

              Thanks again

For chipping, I could not get the simulator to register a shot unless my backswing was at least 2 feet long, which made it impossible to chip the ball less than 20 yards. For shorter chips, I had some success with 2 workarounds: 1) take a 2' backswing and then make a slow, decelerating downswing, or 2) putt the ball, even if well off the green.

Weird. I haven't had any issues with chipping or putting once I got used to it. It isn't a solid match for real golf on how hard you have to hit it (at least for me). I find I need to putt on a flat 30 foot putt like I am maybe 10 feet. Chipping has actually felt pretty accurate to me.

enginy, can you post a video of you chipping so we can see how you are doing it and how the PC isn't picking it up? And handicap only seems to come into play with online which you need to pay for. I set my handicap and in stuff I play where handicap is used, it is factored in. However, for the tour here, it uses its own handicap system and I am only 5 rounds in with no handicap yet. My net and gross scores are the same for now. Hoping after this week's tournament ends, it will assign me a handicap as I will have completed 3 tournys (6 rounds).

For the Tour, I believe handicaps are updated on Tuesday. Once you have played 5 rounds on tour, a handicap will be calculated. So, you should be good to go for the next tournament.

The handicap thing was totally on me.... I set it to + rather than - so was getting put through the wringer on it.

Putting I've got covered having adjusted to the green speed / distances.

Chipping continues to be a sh*t show though. I've tried ball forward and back with varying degrees of shaft lean. I've tried swapping the ball for a tennis ball, placing two balls, even an old sneaker! I've also tried hitting it thick and sadly none of the above produces a shot all the time.

If it did I could adjust for distance but nothing doing

This is the one thing between me and laying out $500 to upgrade. Comps would be too frustrating with the chipping as it is

Maybe you should get in contact with Rapsodo on facebook and tell them your sensor has an issue with sensivity...probably they will send you a replacement.

As you can see with my chipping test some weeks ago (I added the link below) it should be absolutely possible to do short chip-shots, but you really have to swing back at least to, I would say, 08:00 o'clock so the sensor recognizes the movement. If you do a typical "chip-like-putt-swing" you won't get any reaction by the system.

Did you also play around with the different kinds of shots (instead of "chip" you could try normal, pitch and flop to see if there is any difference)? I did my test with "normal" shots btw.

                        Hope this helps,

I just did a little test yesterday in my garden trying to find out how accurate the carry distances are which are shown in TGC software. So what I did: I placed some sticks into the grass every 5 metres (maximum 15 metres carry distance) so I had the chance to see right away where the balls came up and could compare it to the

20m flops, pitches are ok, but I have problems with green side chips, so I've had to resort to using a normal club that I would (PW or 9 iron for example) while having the system set to putting on TGC, It kind of makes sense to me anyway as I use a putting motion with my green side chips - its the best part of my actual real life game. Probably a little to over sensitive in the TGC app though.
