I don't have TGC yet, but the one thing I don't like is that you see the ball on the screen. When you're standing 8 feet back from the screen with your ball at your feet, it doesn't make sense to look up and see the ball ahead of you (and the perspective is wacky for chipping). Has there been any talk of changing the stationary camera angle to be positioned ahead of the ball? Ideally it would be configurable so users could specify how many feet back they are from the screen to have the view adjust accordingly.

To be honest when im playing I dont even know the ball is there....I just see the target
Having the ball 'on screen' is extremely helpful for my customers: they've stopped asking me "Where's my ball?".
From a realism point of view - this isn't ideal: but not everyone is savvy enough to realize that up until reaching the screen the golf ball is real and physical and that for the utmost realism the ball would only appear on the screen once it has been "launched".
The main benefit I see for having the ball on the screen is so when I hit it into the trees (happens quite frequently haha) I can change the views around and see where my outs are.
I could not even imagine playing this game and not be able to see the ball.
I might have a completely different approach to playing this game than anyone else but when I set up my shot at the computer. If I am chipping I set it to putter and then use the S and W key to move the yellow stick to were I think I want to land the ball. If you notice there is 2 yardages listed on the screen one is the hole and the other is the aiming stick. I figure out my landing spot determine how many yards I have to hit it. then change my club back to whatever I am using aim to my landing spot and from that point on I never look at the screen. I square up, look at the ball and swing. When I look up my shot is in the air and then I pray. You're never going to get the image in your head of a true 30 yard chip no matter how hard you look at the screen.
When on the real course I do the same thing. I look at my skycaddie get a yardage then determine a landing spot take a guess at how far that is and I swing just as hard as I would on the simulator and it works out nearly every time. Its amazing how accurate you can be when you just trust it. Everyone that plays on my simulator over the winter months says the same thing when they make a great chip within a few inches of the cup on real grass..... "Simulator, Baby, Simulator" That tells me that they are doing very similar things.

At the same time I appreciate what drewpac is saying - that's a benefit I hadn't thought of. I'm just comparing to my current simulator software (GSA golf...red chain) where it was set up to not show the ball on screen and it made more sense to me. I'd love to see this as an option in setup...camera position relative to ball. Right now the camera is X feet behind the ball (so you see it). It would be great to have the ability to set the camera to be X feet in front of the ball. Obviously not a critical update, but nice to have.
Another question for you guys (and maybe this isn't the best thread?) - do sidehill lies affect ball flight? In the red chain software when I got it (5 years ago now) i'd hit shots that were in-to out with a closed (relative to path club face) and expected a draw as I had hit...and the ball would slice way to the right. For the first couple months I figured the software was wonky until I finally had it happen when I was on an extreme side hill (previously I couldn't tell when the lie was a slight side hill) and then it clicked. In TGC on a simulator, are lies factored in to the shot spin? I'm hoping not...again, it would be a good option to be able to turn off (which is what red chain added when I suggested it).

You're missing my point somehow. On real grass you stand behind the ball and survey your shot. The ball is in your view. You pick a line and a landing spot. At that point you know you want to fly the ball to a certain number. And after that there is no need to see anything but your line and landing spot. But to get a true line you have to be able to see the ball prior to standing over the it. Its all the same on the big screen. Or you can guess where the center of the screen is. Do me a favor, Next time you make it to the course cover the line of sight to the ball with your hand. Then try and line up your shot. keep the ball hidden until the point you're standing over it ready to swing. You commented earlier that the perspective is whacky. You have to remember your looking at a 2D image not 3D, the perspective is always going to be whacky no matter if the ball is in the view or not. You just pick a number and hit to that number. Its just that simple.
In the Protee 2.0 you had the ability to move forward and take the ball out of view. But other than moving up to survey the green I never used it that way. There are many things that Protee 2.0 had that TGC don't. But it's early in the development and I am sure there will be all we had and more when it's all said and done. We used to have a stick so you could line up to an exact spot you wanted to hit. Now we have a reticle. On a drive that reticle leaves a large margin for error, the stick was precise. As your shots gets shorter the margin is reduced. Maybe since I have been playing for a long time judging the distances on the screen is easier for me. When I look at a chip shot of lets say 15 yards I can look at the screen and tell that I need to fly the ball 5 yards to clear the fringe. And if that is my shot(bump and run) I fly the ball 5 yards and let it roll out if that is the shot the green calls for. I see the 2D image, decide what shot I want to play. Then judge the landing spot , aim the reticle, and then just focus on the ball and my shot. I don't look up at the screen. It's still going to be the same as I left it when I lined up the shot. And I know for certain that it is not going to look like it would if I were standing over the ball outside. So to make the best of what I have I focus on the ball and my shot. And not to brag but I started out as a 17 handicap and now I am at 9. And most of my improvements are the short game. And to be perfectly honest that is the weakest point of any simulator. But I spend hours and hours practicing on the simulator chipping from a given distance. Then I move out and practice some more. And when I look at my skycaddie and it says 38 yards to the hole and I know I want to fly it to the pin. I put the same swing on the ball outside as I do inside. And again not to brag, but if we had 6' gimmies outside I would only have to putt on half the holes. It's too bad that that chip is my 3rd or 4th shot and not my 2nd or 3rd. Maybe this year that will change.
One observation I have made about playing on a simulator. Players who play rounds using a yardage device adapt to the sim play much quicker than someone who is a feel player. There have been over 50 different players that play on my sim and all of the feel players struggle around the greens. But the players who use a device to give them a yardage seem to play just as they do outside. And I think that is due to the fact that they don't need a perspective. They just need a number.
Obviously we see it differently. And there are advantages to having it both ways. But I think if you made a list of pro's and cons, seeing the ball would come out on top. And I for one would be disappointed if the ball is taken out of the view. Thats just my 2 cents.
