  • SkyTrak connection question

Over on the SkyTrak thread, a link to some official looking support documentation for SkyTrak integration was posted. In reading it, the documentation makes it look like you can only connect SkyTrak to TGC via USB. Please tell me this is not so. This would be a deal breaker for me. WGT and E6 can use SkyTrak's built in wifi connectivity. Surely TGC will be able to use that too I hope?

    Why a deal breaker?

My setup has the computer in a different room from the skytrak. That cannot be changed. In addition to the cost, having that wifi connection ability was a key element of me picking SkyTrak. If TGC does not support this, that is a serious oversight. Hoping it was just poor documentation, either not putting wifi in there or stating that USB is only for initial setup.

This may not be possible for you, but as a work around you could potentially use a USB extension cable. I have my PC in my basement currently, and routed a cable from my basement to my garage and everything works great. Obviously this wouldn't be ideal for some.

I contacted ProTee United and got this reply: "It will work with WIFI, but we recommend to use a USB cable. Upon release we only support USB connections. We do not have the support organization in place to figure out SkyTrak direct modes, network modes, ip addresses, security, syncing and network routing issues. So if you experience any kind of connection issue you will need to hook up your SkyTrak to USB."

As another alternative I am looking into VirtualHere for a USB via IP solution. I do have that mac mini that I could use simply to route the USB connection to the iMac that will be playing the game. But first I'll try out the wifi setup.

Surely there are products available to boost the USB signal via active extenders. You should be able to run a USB signal as far as you want, provided you support the signal with active (probably powered) external extender. So maybe you have 50' of length to cover....maybe you have to have several active extenders that plug into power along the way.

        Shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Good point. There are usb cables with built in extenders. I'm going about 50' to a HD camera by using 3 of them. Just like using regular cables. No external power needed. About $10 each as i recall. But wireless USB repeaters should work too. Doesn't seem like a deal breaker. Also why isn't this in the Skytrak TGC section since it is a Skytrak issue? I hope the regular TGC section doesn't get filled with Skytrak related issues...

The walls in between the Skytrak and the computer make any cable a deal breaker. It will have to be a wireless solution. Hopefully the native wifi works. But if not I will have to hope that the USB via IP solutions work as a backup.

WIFI will work fine. You just won't get Protee to do a remote session to hook it up.

Just curious... What are you using for a display then if you cant get cables to the room the ST is in from the computer?

I am trying to figure out all my options for my build and am trying to eliminate building another computer just for the ST. May end up in a similar situation as you...

I will let you know how this works out..I am going to attempt to use this:

It should allow me to pipe HDMI video from my gaming PC (in the house), to my projector in the garage. My Nvidia 970 video card has HDMI output.

It is about 30 feet, through 2 walls, so it may not work for me...

Then I will be using the "Intel Remote Keyboard" app to control mouse/keyboard. I tested this out this weekend and it works great.

Update: IOGear wireless HDMI box has been installed. Connected right up with no problems, was totally plug and play. Its going 35 feet from my office PC, through a few walls and into the garage where my projector is located. I hit for 15 minutes to test it, no issues at all. Looks just like a wired HDMI cable, no quality issues, no dropouts.

Shardak - I'm thinking about a similar setup. Going from my basement office pc to garage sim. Thanks for posting about this and how it is working for you. I'd be curious when you have a longer session on how well it works and if it stays consistent. Also how well the remote keyboard works.

Wifi works fine with skytrak and TGC I tested shot delay between USB and Wifi..they are identical.

No reason not to use Wifi.

that's good to hear. impressed there's not much delay, granted it wouldn't really matter so much for this particular use case. I was looking at steam link, etc, but simply projecting hdmi and doing remote input seems simpler (and sounds like it would perform better) anyways. i'm contemplating a laptop solution versus beefing an existing PC up since my current setup is about the same distance and wall count, but may change to front of house to back garage (longer distance and more walls).
                  Thanks for the update!
