  • Getting greens to hold?

For the life of me I can't get any shots to hold greens. I'm a SkyTrak user, using callaway chrome soft balls which usually hold pretty well for me IRL.

Ive got green firmness set to 1. Using a cce mat. Any advice here? What spin rate do most of you get on your wedges?

    Thanks

Yes it is a limitation of TGC.

Set firmness to 0..it helps a little bit.

I can usually get 9i and wedges to hold. Everything else, its running off the back.

I hope this is something that is improved in TGC 2.0.

I had the same issue, I agree with the prior about firmness to 0 helps a little but it's still not great. I can get enough spin on a 7 iron to hold but that's about it. Forcing me to hit more cut shots then I would like to increase backspin.
I think I average around 7800rpm backspin with PW on Skytrak range but I'll confirm tomorrow

I don't think it's too bad. Try reducing firmness and green speed. I do think a lot of courses are sloped to the back so pay attention to the course design. The tourney scores are low enough we don't want too easy greens otherwise folks will have kick in birdies all day.

I get 9-11k back spin with a wedge. No problem holding any green. I use a ProV1. I use the CCE.

          What spin are you getting?

I need to see what spin I'm getting. I can't change green speed with skytrak, I think I was told before that was locked for us, any time I try it just goes back to the default when you load.

Ill try zero firmness and see how that goes from 1. The guys getting birdies all the time must have slower greens than me, they're like ice. I'll try the pro v1 too and see if changes.

im excited to start entering tournaments but these 3 putts and having to chip every time I hit my approach on the green aren't as fun

Hit I after your shot in TGC. You'll see your spin there. Can't you change green speeds where you change firmness?

I'm also using a CCE mat by the way. Using B330s and Srixon xv balls currently

                this

Actually, better yet, post some videos. So much of this depends on the individual shot into the individual green and landing location.

I ghost someone from here, with turn order on, on every round I play and see very few shots roll out that I thought should have done something different. I personally have a pretty low ball flight comparatively and can still hold certain shots down to around a 6i. 9i-wedges, depending on the slopes of the greens, I get some pretty nice checks and backspin. So much so that I have to be real careful with the 56*-62*'s on a lot of greens.

I've been super impressed with the physics.

How do you record a video of your shot? I've played about 5 full rounds on TGC, have yet to have any ball check and roll back, including my 60 degree Cleveland that usually bites well

You use a video camera. Start with the numbers. Just take a screen shot of the post shot screen which you get by hitting I

Pretty tough for me as well for anything that is over a 7. Even then the 7 and 8 roll out more than usual. I do believe there is a reduction in spin on mat vs real life so that can play a part as well. I wonder if protee users see this as much as those who use actual spin since their spin is estimated. On the flip side, i do get full wedge shots that spin back more than IRL. Just chalk it up to a sim attribute that is hard to model in the algorithm.

I am a Skytrak/TGC/CCE/ProV1 user and have my green speed set to 8 and the firmness to whatever the default is. CCE will punish your spin if you catch it fat & high on the club face. When I catch a nipper they grab with wedges on chips and pitches. Sometimes too much. I have been impressed with the physics & agree to take a good look at the landing surface. I have had more bad breaks spinning the ball back down the hill vs crazy roll out. The 1000 rpm per club is a good starting point. ex: 7i = 7000. My suggestion would be to start with contact and work from there.

Thanks everybody for your input. I bought a couple boxes of ProV1 and I'm now getting around 9000 on my 60 degree wedge, not as high as I'd like but better. After trying some different things I think it's due to my CCE mat. Even on shots that didn't feel fat I can see my spin rate really drop. I think I'm just going to have to develop a better swing to compensate. I played my last handicap round last night at an 82 so at least I'm starting to get a better feel for putting on this.

Highest spin should come from a sand wedge or gap wedge, if you can believe it. 9k on lob is good. In around 9500.

This is a serious issue with TGC and why I am barely playing it anymore right now until it's fixed. I just want the flexibility to make the greens as soft as I want so I can adjust for the conditions I play in real life. We had our worst drought here in Ontario Canada in decades, and still my irons were sticking on greens better than they do in TGC.
