  • Replicate course without LIDAR

I have a local course I want to create that does not have LIDAR data available. I know of the tools to get the process started creating courses without LIDAR, but is there something similar you can use so you can at least import the satellite images into TGC somehow even if terrain starts out flat? Looking for a way to avoid replicating from a blank sheet design without LIDAR.

    Thanks.

You can create a flat course using OSM and then do the elevations manually. That’s how we did it before lidar.

which course are you looking to build? Even if there is not proper LiDAR data for it, you could potentially have a better starting point than just a flat course if there is DEM data. If there is DEM data available, I could help you turning that into a LAS file that is useable in Chad's Tool.

I got 3-4 I would like to build over the next few months, but I wanted to start with a small 9 hole course. I mapped it out in OSM but without elevation data as everyone knows, it is a ton of work to even get something that looks even approximately like the course (especially for a beginner). I wanted to do some courses in the state of Georgia but it has very little LIDAR data on the USGS website. Maybe if there is a better source for this state? If you know of any that would help? What sources are available for DEM data?

Hi sirish 19, I just started my first course build. My local course doesn't have Lidar data available but noticed your comments about using DEM data. I'm not sure what data is available in Canada, I did come across this website: https://open.canada.ca/data/en/datas...a-45d1d2051333

Would this KMZ file work to convert to a LAS file? I created the splines in OSM along with Chad's Tool to create my course on a flat layout. Just trying to figure out how to use some other data for the elevations when Lidar is not available.

Hi, it should be possible to open the KMZ file and convert that data to LAS. Can you send me the KMZ file you want and the North, South, East & West coordinates for the course?

These are the coordinates to the course (PGGCC) from google maps:
          53.888252716903295, -122.77514347796608
          53.89301473140183, -122.77940952749657

          53.89201401003552, -122.7711978985595

I'm not sure if this is the correct file you need?

A course without LIDAR will be VERY difficult to kinda get right. Sculpting takes a ton of time.

Hi, I am not able to open the link above. I am getting a 404 Not Found error. I actually don't think a KMZ file is going to work. TIF or KML file formats might work if you can find those specific to your course.

The attached images are only .jpg so I could upload them to this site. But I am able to export these as .TIF files. Do you think this would work?

They might, as long as the files contain elevation data. if you can share the TIF file I will have a look.

How do you convert a TIF file or a KML into a lidar file? I've only found a way to do it the other way. I'm trying to make my home course but it has no lidar (or not public at least) but I would like some start with the TIF or KML file then do some sculpting
