  • QED ball review

I look forward to the possibility of the new Callaway premium ball option. It is really needed. My QED has been awesome as I like the club impact video more that the others available. Also it is extremely reliable and accurate. It also has a generous hitting area. I still do consider upgrading because of the marked premium ball situation however. Recently Vice has provided a higher grade surlyn ball as compared to the stock Bridgestone that was previously available. I have used them extensively and they are a massive upgrade but still not a premium ball.
I have been also using the drilled balls from Iowacat89. These have been excellent. Currently he has new prov1, an older prov1 and the premium maxfli ball. I have tested these against each other along with the new vice ball for distance, spin and durability.
The distance off the driver and spin numbers are all almost equal including the Vice ball. The Vice ball holds up very well until you get to a 9 iron. Above that, you will see a marked drop in spin numbers. They do have a much better feel than the old bridgestone. They are extremely durable. You can play numerous rounds with a ball and i haven't worn out one yet. The dots stay on much longer than the bridgestone model.
The new prov1, older prov1 and the maxfli give almost identical numbers for distance and spin throughout the set. The provide great spin for wedges. The only difference i have noticed is in durability. The new prov1 provides the longest durability. You can play a few rounds and not notice hardly any wear. The older prov1 does well on durability but the will show wear and tear earlier. The Maxfli provides excellent distance, low driver spin and great wedge spin, essentially identical to the Prov1's. The durability is easily the worst of all the balls. It loses its color quickly. Performance doesn't suffer to any great degree but the cover doesn't hold up very well. Eventually all of the drilled balls will crack but it is amazing how many shots they will take before that happens. I would estimate 2-300 shots on avg for their lifespan. I typically use the Vice ball for tee shots and fairway woods and then the dilled ball for irons to help increase the longevity of the drilled balls.
Overall, I would say the new drilled prov1 is the best with the older prov1 a close second. The maxfli goes to the rear because the cover isn't quite as durable but it does perform very well.
I am very impressed with the Vice ball and will continue to use it for the longer shots.
I think having a premium non-drilled ball is ultimately the long term answer but the drilled balls are very good for the time being.

Thanks for taking the time to compare all of the options. Glad to hear that the 2023 does last a bit longer. It takes a lot of hitting to figure that out. I have had one person report that the Standard compression MaxFli (White box) lasts the longest for him. Otherwise, the 2021 ProV1 seems to be the most popular and the MaxFli is the most economical to get started. I have a good selection of the different types right now if anyone needs some - just send me a message.
    Thanks again,
    Mike
