Hole 1: Your round begins with a slightly downhill par 4. A driver to the left center of the fairway will avoid the 5 bunkers in and around the fairway. From there, you are left with a short iron. Aim to the right center of the green here as it will set up the easiest putt for birdie. Short approach shots will roll of the front of the green.
Hole 2: Accuracy is at a premium off the tee here to avoid the three pot bunkers in the fairway off the tee. Depending on the wind, it may be safer to lay up with a 3 wood. A mid iron awaits as you need to get it over the water and onto the correct tier of the green. Putts on the wrong tier could have disastrous results. Par is a great score here.
Hole 3: is an uphill par 4 with a choice off the tee. Play it safe and hit to the left fairway? Or try to cut off some distance and give yourself a better angle to the green on the right side? Either way, the third green can cause headaches for those that are short of the pin. Play it a bit long, that should give you the easier putt.
Hole 4: The first par three at The Links at Lions' Bay is a long one. As it is slightly downhill, with a long green...don't be afraid to play 2 or 3 clubs less than normal with a slight draw and land it at the front of the green and let it roll up towards the pin located at the back. It's tricky, but a well placed long iron can leave you an easy putt for birdie...easier said than done.
Hole 5: Don't get greedy on the 5th hole. Unless you have a very favorable wind...an iron layup to the right center of the fairway is the smart call here. From there you are just left with a short wedge to a green the slopes from back to front. Aim to the right of the green and let it funnel down.
Hole 6: Long hitters may be licking their chops when they see the relatively short yardage on the first of two par 5's on the day. Not so fast. A driver or 3 wood off the tee leads you to a very difficult decision. Those that go for it in two need to be absolutely certain they have dialed in their distance as a steep cliff into the ocean awaits balls that have just a bit too much mustard. Punishing if you are wrong...a possible eagle if you are right. Your call. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Hole 7: The signature hole at Lions' Bay is also one of the toughest driving holes on the course. Aim left or right of the large pot bunker right in the middle of the fairway..(geez who put that there?). From there, its a mid to short iron over Lions' Bay to a large green the slopes gently towards to ocean.
Hole 8: Thread the needle off the tee on this short par 4 to avoid the pot bunkers. From there, it is an uphill wedge shot into a green. Should be a good look at birdie, provided you don't find the sand.
Hole 9: The front nine ends with a simple little par 3...or is it really that simple? A front pin location with a headwind can make it very difficult to get it close here. You might need a long putt to make birdie here.
