  • Monks Head Golf Links

Hi everyone i released my latest course the other night Monks Head, the Links theme is one of the more difficult themes to work with, theres not a lot of variety with the plants, but hopefully if you like my style of courses you won't be to harsh on me lol, thanks Nigel

I sympathise I have protruding discs which give me daily discomfort, in fact I had to do a few hours of artwork in work yesterday and sitting down is the worst thing for my back so I'm in agony today as well, many thanks for the kind words I would take it easy before tackling this one.

Because it's done in the links theme which I think most designers acknowledge is the toughest I decided after a few restarts to give up and do it in my own style, so that's why I designed it like I did, firm and fast it had to be as a links course normally plays this way, some holes do need to be played short and let it run onto the green but the greens on par 3's etc will hold.

As always looking forward to your views on the course and hope it's not to frustrating for you, Nigel

As for getting the recognition, it's one of those things beyond my control, I make them the way I like a course to play and look, no course created on a computer game actually looks anything like it does in real life I wish we had the tools to do it but we don't, and as you say most real life courses are not the most visually appealing.

Thats all I know some of the games top designers have published courses recently and I believe my recent courses are every bit as good as theirs whether or not I get acknowledged by the tgc community, what I do find slightly annoying is that they release a course and it immediately gets picked for a tournament, non of my courses have been picked for tournaments which is their privilege but I've played in tournaments where the courses in my opinion are not up to the standard of my recent courses but what can you do, I said not long after I joined the tgc community that it's very clique and that belief remains true today.

Thats why I value the opinion of the people who do bother to play and comment on my courses, I will listen to negative feedback and if I deem it a valid point I do try to put it right in the next course, many thanks

100 percent agree on the cliques that I see going on over there from he short time ive been on that forum. Didn't even realize about the tournaments and how they go about choosing the courses for them, super annoying that others get snatched up when you know yours are just a good if not better, im sure that how a lot of them began to start getting recognized.

Ive played a ton of different courses at this point and I would put your original designs right up there with any other ones honestly. I remember playing your first course (spirit valley) that was posted on here by the protee guys and that one was a little tight at times but looked fantastic. Come a great way already in the 3 designed after that (or the last 3 you've released at least) in widening up things a little bit, but not too much as to make it too easy. Caused it to be a fair challenge, especially for how it would play with real clubs.

Cant wait to give this one a proper go and especially cant wait to see what you do with the course creator when TGC2 comes out, the running water alone excites me abut how designs are gong to look.

I played this course. One of the first things I noticed is the heavy flickering of the water in the distance against the shoreline of the far hills. I know this is a problem with TGC and not your course but I'm wondering if there are design tricks to avoid that effect? It gave me a headache.

I think your graphics are great, I've said before you seem to have a real talent in that area and it shows here as well.

I noticed in some holes the course flyover didn't stay on the fairway but cut the corner rather severely. What in the design controls that? Do the designers have control over it?

I was pleasantly surprised how high the frame rates were even though you have lots of nice graphics. I don't know how much effort you put into fine tuning that but it shows nice looking courses can be made while giving great frame rates.

A couple puts came up short but wouldn't stop and rolling back off the green. Didn't look that steep but guess it was! I don't play with grids. I know there are there for a reason but they are ugly and have annoying flicker so I don't use them. Anyway not a problem more an excuse to highlight that is nice when designers check their greens to make sure they can be played without grids. Overall I thought your greens were fine.

Personally I would enjoy your course more if there weren't so many blind tee shots. I always enjoy the hole flyover where I can take in the nice graphic design more than when actually standing on the tee ready to play. Cycling through the V key to elevate the camera view is broken in the sim version since it points straight down to where the avatar would be even though there is no avatar on the sim. If it would elevate and point into the fairway then one could play with that view and your designs would work for me. Hopefully Protee will change this in the next version (I've previously flagged this in the post 3.0 updates thread). Your courses are a good example of why an elevated camera that works is useful.

Overall I like this one better than the one I tried earlier (hav u safalls). Doesn't feel as cluttered and played a little better for me. I've found the mood I'm in when I play a course affects my perception of it so I'd have to play them again to know if it is the course or my mood that I'm commenting on! Lol

Did you say you used the links theme for this? I'd say a creative use of the theme then. I never thought links while playing the course but the look certainly worked for me!

Overall better than 90% of the courses out there IMO.

Hi FaultyClubs, many thanks for playing Monks Head, unfortunately water on the horizon does have that flicker and it's a bit hard to hide it when your designing a coastal course, hopefully tgc2 may have a solution.

The flyovers are probably caused by the way points on the shot direction, most T shots are around 280 to 305 on PC and Ps4 etc:, but to do a dogleg where it's possible to fly the corner the camera will follow the waypoint.

For this links course I made the greens fast, and firm, the course needs to be played a few times to see the best choice of club, either land it short and let it run on the green or if the flag is far enough on it should hold.

I normally put 3 or 4 holes with which are truly blind, but with this links design the hills and foliage put another couple on the borderline but I believe the start of he fairways can just be made out, I live in Wales UK which is very mountainous so blind T shots are a norm, I'm sure if the camera was fixed it would improve the views.

I have quite a few courses now which I believe you would enjoy, Desert Wells which was before Monks Head I'm sure you'd enjoy, also I have a couple under my old Ps4 name, Lochry Doon and Vale Meadows, I would appreciate your views if you can spare the time, I used the links theme deliberately because most designers seem to agree it's one of the poorer themes to work with, that's why there aren't as many links themed courses as other themes, I must admit that after a few weeks of trying to get the feel of a proper links course I gave up and made it more like the Archipelago type course that it ended up, I'm still happy with the final look though, although it's nothing like my original vision for the links theme that I envisaged.

Designing a course for a computer game is easy, designing a course for a computer game that can have up to 25mph winds in any direction and making it fair, challenging and most of all enjoyable to play is hard, that's why we appreciate the feedback from you guys, the old adage that you can't please all of the people all of the time is true so I make courses that I enjoy playing myself first and then hope others enjoy them as well.

Many thanks, much appreciated for playing the course and the feedback, Nigel

Wow, that course looks great. I will try it today. I am new to TGC. Is there an easy way to view your courses without playing them? I seem to have to request to play a course then see what it looks like on the tee box, and then exit the game and go to the next couse. I would like to view your other courses before I play them. I have TGC for skytrak so I assume yours is on there for that or is it only PC and Ps4? Cheers

Just did a playthrough/commentary on this course. Great track. Went bananas and shot a 32 on the front 9 that was 400 yards longer than the back. Hard f bomb and club slam on the 12 after a water tee ball for anyone who may enjoy that haha.

course looks great but at 7,000 plus yards just to long for me and I would say about 90 of golfers. Now, in this community perhaps it only knocks out 50% percent since many that have simulators are above average golfers. Any thoughts on making a shorter version - like 6200 - 6400 yards?

Course does look great - just giving feedback as it relates to me.
