  • UK Simulator Build - South Coast Portsmouth

    Good Evening All,

First time poster, long time viewer. I have finally decided to take the time and effort to build a golf simulator in my double garage. I have done some initial measurements and have decided upon a frame size of 7.5 ft wide by 7 ft high as I have restrictions within the garage.

I shall initially start off with the cage, an impact screen and mat, and then once happy get the projector, simulator device and laptop.

My question is regarding the size of the impact screen, does it need to be the same size as the back part of the cage or does it have to be fractionally smaller so that I can fix the screen to the frame via grommets and a hooking arrangement.

A note of thanks to the guys on the UK simulator topic as I have used there ideas for the cage, net, and suppliers.

Then finally, looking for somewhere in the UK to purchase a good mat which can be utilised to use the optishot system?

    Many Thanks

    Richie

Also on a side note. Very interested to know where in the UK our Simulator Builders are.

    Hopefully speak soon.

      Hi Richie,

Have a look at this diagram I got from Par2Pro as to how big the screen should be versus the size of your cage.

Here's a link to my build... I'm up in Aberdeen.
Back at the beginning of 2015, I had a go at turning my 2 car garage into a simulator room. One of the main issues I faced was that I had to have it collapsable...

      Good luck... it becomes addictive!

Thanks for that Pete. It confirms my suspicion that the impact screen needs to be slightly smaller than the cage in which it sits in.

In fact the cage I designed was based around where you got your materials from The Metal Store, plus they cut to exact lengths so no need to worry there. Can now order the frame and the archery netting that I shall be getting from Collins Nets. Now I have the drawing I can order the exact size of impact frame that is required.

Next is onto the mat, struggling to find reasonably priced suppliers in the UK, I am surprised that there is not more of a market here in the UK.

I'm from the uk, paid 250 for a range Matt, butive just made a new one myself, bought some reasonable price quality putting green grass, put some cloud 9 underlay underneath it, cut a strip out for country club elite turf strip which I got from eBay . Range matts come with issues, plenty of threads on it.

hi, good luck with your build. Having built my first sim 18 months ago I've just quit my job to startup a UK golf simulation business reselling launch monitor, mats, netting, screens etc.
My first sim was using a cage and I had issues like some others with balls ricocheting off the top bar and coming back like bullets.
If you haven't already made the decision, you could consider using steel rope just in front of the top bar to hang an impact screen (with eyelets/hooks) eliminating any possibility of bounce back.
Also, not sure what you plan to do screen wise, but a good archery weave net could cost around £200 compared with £600+ for premium impact screens and I think the quality is excellent. Please get in touch if I can help. I do resell mats too but generally in the premium end from £500+

I wrote this before seeing your last post. Collins Nets is a great choice ( it's me that's quoted on their website

Good Evening, could you keep me posted with regards reselling of any launch monitors that you are able to get hold of, or if you have a website?

I've had clamps holding my screen for a number of years - the work perfectly - just fold over the material.

No need for sewing of any kind and you can adjust them down the road for a perfect fit.

Yes, they have a ratchet mechanism - just open and close. I originally bought them to prototype the screen size, but they worked too well.

one every two feet on sides works for me. I actually hang the fabric over a bar on the top and clamp with five spring clamps like these

if you get good material, it will work pretty simply - I've seen so much fore-thought going into screens - thought it would be so hard to get it right, but it isn't.

Hi - first time posting as well

I started building mine at Xmas when I persuaded my wife it was the perfect present. I tried to do it as cost effectively as possible.

I used themetalstore for a frame, surround is black weed suppressant off amazon, grass was an offcut from one of the online companies. Bungee from tarp clips uk limited and clips off amazon. My mat was from amtechrange.co.uk and is fine as a starter which I can upgrade in future, projector from richersounds in sale.

Just need the weather to warm up or a heater will be the next buy.

I'll post some pics later - couldn't have done it without this forum!
