New Build let me know your thoughts

Hi All,

First off I have learned a lot of information just reading through all of the topics! You all here seem like a great community and are passionate about the game.

I have decided to build a dedicated simulation room primarily for practice but I am sure I will get into some of the simulation tours as well. I have just started construction so wanted to get everyone's suggestion before I get to far. Please feel free to comment on things I should change or you I did not cover

Room/Building: In Process
12X14 building with 10ft ceilings is being built in my backyard. It will match my house (requirement of wife and budget killer) and is dedicated to a man cave I plan on having the interior just finished with plywood/OSB and painted black. I am thinking of having carpet tiles done approx. 5 feet on all sides from the screen and the floor would be done in putting turf with some cups around the room.

Here is what I found for putting turf (flooring) that seemed reasonable (Not Purchased)

Here is what I was thinking for the hitting strip that I would cut in to match the flooring - Although the DIY truestike on these forums looks like something I could pull off (Not Purchased)

I was just thinking about using a carpet padding and the placing the putting turf on top and cutting the mat section in to match height - Does anyone see any problems with this?

Skytrak - I only bought the LM with the game improvement package. Haven't decided on a sim yet but was thinking JNPG and TGC.

The structure walls and carpet tiles will then frame the screen in. I need to find some type of black padded material to cover the screen connection (Any ideas?) Strips of gym mat material perhaps

Would be mounted overheard - This has been a pain to figure out and frankly I'm am still not sure.

Already have a high end gaming computer I just built that will handle all the software.

Well, I will jump in and say that I think you got all the basics covered. I think the 12 x 14 is going to be pretty tight, but others can guide you more.

I installed a putting green in my simulator as well and you have to think of the subfloor (will take away from overall ceiling height). I built my subfloor to match my protee mat which is 2.75 inches high which happens to be a good depth for putting green holes. I used 2 x 4 laying flat with 3/4 inch plywood and 1/2 putting turf = 2.75 inches. and my protee sensor is flush. My overall putting green is 15 x 22 and it lays perfectly flat and does not move at all with no adhesive or nails...it is extremely heavy. Another trick I found from the installer is that if you want to increase the speed of the green, they can sweep in sand which will speed up the green and add even more weight to it.

If you have time, order the screen with DB and the gang. Look for the forum message "order screen from manufacturer". Will save you a ton of money and you will get a 1st class screen.

You may have a high end computer, but the main thing is the graphics card. Especially if you run TGC (which I recommend). Get a GTX 1080 or higher and you will love it.

Thanks Gene! I jumped on that thread to get a screen ordered. Great information on the subfloor - What putting turf did you use?

Wish i could have gone bigger that 12x14 but it is the area that I had to work with in that section of the yard. Any major concerns with this size - I took a few practice swings on the new foundation and there seems to be space.

Is 12x14 finished interior dimensions? It will feel fine standing on the foundation, once the walls/roof are up, it's going to close down. Pretty sure you're only going to be able to his from one side, which may or may not be an issue for you. I don't think you will be centered either, so keep that in mind as the projector now may be behind you. Could be a problem with wedges as you get more upright in the swing.

Thanks for the response wbond - I was thinking about how quickly this area is going to close down with walls and a roof. All of my buddies are right handed, so one side is fine for my purposes. I am sure 12x14 is the exterior, typically what is measured on buildings, they start building on Thursday so I am getting concerned this isn't going to be enough space now.

Perhaps I can see if i can squeeze another foot on width and depth so 13X15. I would love to be centered or close on the screen. Going to call them now to see what options are available - I should have posted here before starting the project

Do you think I could look at doing a floor mount for projector? I see they make those cases that look like turf that could work - Although I would probably have to go ultra short throw.

Second was wbond says. 12 wide is ok but the length is bare minimum. I've seen offset sims at 12 wide and it seems like lots of room but your length will make you crazy. If you can get to 18 you'll be super glad you did. I'm at 20 and I'd love 23.

Ok guys thanks - I just measured again. I can squeeze out another 3 feet in length and 1 ft in width so 13x17. The builders aren't happy but they will live. Construction starts on Thursday.

Putting turf material floor suggestions?
Projector suggestions?
Black out material suggestions to cover grommets and angle iron? Still going to do carpet tiles 5ft out of the walls but would like to frame the screen nice for finished look
