i've been following the two threads below and thought i'd try to provide some data. i've been using fiberbuilt in my garage since i set up my sim 2 years ago. i also use a cce mat at work. i generally take a shallow divot so i've never had a problem with either, but GMR noticed that hitting from his fiberbuilt gave him a higher launch which in turn gave him more carry than he's accustomed to in real life for the longer clubs. on fiberbuilt's site, they claim that their nylon grass mat is the most realistic hitting surface on the market with no difference in ball speed and spin but with about 2 degrees higher launch with an 8i. also, someone posted about fiberbuilt coming out with a gel mat of their own in the very near future. there was discussion about testing fiberbuilt vs cce vs divot action vs true strike and since i already had 2 of the 4, i decided to make my own gel and divot action mats. i will drag my cce mat home later this week so i can do a comparison on all of them, but for now, here are some numbers with my 6i from fiberbuilt vs gel.

my numbers are an average of ten decent strikes from each surface. i'm still a high handicap golfer with an inconsistent swing so i will not tell you how many shots it took for me to get 20 decent strikes and on my above average strikes, i'm still over hooking it. the gel did seem to launch lower with everything else being about the same which surprised me. also, i do not get away with hitting it thin the way i do with fiberbuilt. i did not expect to like hitting from the gel as much as i did. to me, hitting from the gel felt more like hitting off of the real thing. there were two negatives that i noticed. one, it is more difficult to hit a flop. with fiberbuilt you can hit a flop shot pretty easily because the ball is sitting up so nicely so it's more like hitting a flop off of a nice lie in the grass. off of the gel, it's more like trying to flop from a very tight lie. two, because it is very squishy, the ball can move or fall off of the tee more easily. at this point i've only hit around 200 balls off of the gel so i don't know how durable it is going to be but for now, i think i'm sticking with the gel.
