I don’t know the reason but repeatedly run into it at the place I go for lessons. I’ll just say that spin is the only stat I lack a bit of faith in for Trackman which for indoors is a huge deal since it uses that for carry calculation. The only times my ball has been flying 20 yards longer than normal is because my spin numbers are greatly reduced. Just my personal experience and could be an issue with that TM but happened on multiple occasions.

First of all, since you're training with Trackman indoor, if you want to see the right spin, you MUST put the metallic stickers on the ball facing the screen. That way it'll show the measured ball spin as long as there is 8~10ft of space. On a faster driver shots, more than 13ft is recommended. My house is 13ft and with a metallic sticker, I capture all ball spins except for a driver (driver I get about 20% measured).

To your question, I would be very cautious to say Trackman indoor's carry is questionable. In fact in my testing, GC2 (I'm sure GC Quad is similar) actually showed more discrepancy in carry result both indoor and outdoor, especially GC2 having longer carry than TM4 on average. Outdoor is as you know TM4 will track the ball all the way so it is highly likely that a radar will be more accurate than a camera for ball data (including Carry where TM4 actually measures carry). During outdoor test, GC2 always showed slightly longer carry than TM4 in almost all of my shots.
Indoor testing, not only did GC2 showed more carry with higher spins on average, when TM4 measured the right ball spin, it was still within the same ballpark for an optimal flight, whereas GC2 showed the discrepancy as high as 23 yards.

Long story short, GC2 data had more margin of error, and thus will not believe the carry distance any more than Trackman whether it's indoor or outdoor.
Ball Speed, Launch Angle, Side Angle, Peak Height are similar in any condition between the two.
However, with Tilt Angle, Descent Angle, Carry, Offline, GC2 goes wrong here and there thus showing more margin of error than Trackman.

See the attached below for optimal flight result. TM4 calculated both shots (not measured), where Shot 1 is when GC2 had more carry distance than TM4, and Shot 2 is vice versa. (And they were not really good shots either, thus comes more of a margin of error discrepancy).
As you can see, when GC2 had shorter carry, it actually should've been even shorter by 13 yards, and when GC2 had longer carry, the ball should've stopped 23 yards before.
This does not happen all the time, but to me it was proven that GC2 data definitely had more margin of error when the data is not output correctly. When GC2 outputs data correctly, they are as accurate as they can be.

Lastly, this is only for Driver shots, and I had no problem gathering other clubs' ball spin data from TM4, so I can't say for other irons and stuff.

The exaggerated carry on low spin driver shots on gc2 is a known issue. (don't know why they can't fix it?) I wonder if it's same on the quad?
I sometimes play in a league at my friends sim place (with trackmans) and all of us hit our irons about a 1-1,5 club longer in there.
Trackman 3 and 4 but no stickers on the balls, he says they wear down his screens. This is not a big issue once you are aware of it, you just get used to it. But for serious practice you have to use the stickers.

I wonder how a lovechild between TM 4 and a Quad would behave :-)

Legendsfan are you using a metallic sticker indoors? If the spin number is bad (one that it is not confident in when doing its calcs) then TM will not show the shot. Is it your driver that is giving you the problems?

I definitely don’t want to sidetrack the topic. This has happened with irons for me and I have never used a sticker on the ball. This is at a professional teaching center.

Your professional teaching centre should be using the metallic sticker. Otherwise you will get the result you are seeing, which you note does not happen all the time which I would argue is a good result then for TM as it is still giving good info most of the time and would likely give you better info that is less likely to be erroneous if the indoor conditions as recommended by TM are used.

Thus, I would suggest using the metallic sticker going forward rather than suggesting that there is an issue with TM.

legendsfan , I happened to look at my Trackman data from previous sessions and I still had those data from 2 places that you are talking about from a year ago. About 90% of my iron shots' ball spins were all calculated. I took like 80 samples, put down the avg # in the optimal flight optimizer, and the optimal carry distance was within 1-2 yards for all 4 irons (pitching wedge, 56 wedge, 6 iron, 7 iron).

So what does this tell me? I would say if TM was still within 1-2 yards of tolerance even when they were calculated, you can safely assume that a) ball speed and launch angle are way more important factors in giving more or less carry and/or b) spin rate is less important in determining carry, but more important for total distance. I personally don't look at total distance for both devices since there are too many variations anyway.

On the other hand, with GC2 data, it looked like anything that wasn't a driver showed 5-8 less yds on your carry. Better than a driver? Yes.

Conclusion for my testing with non-driver: TM calculated ball spin = within 1yd tolerance, GC2 = within 5yds tolerance.
Another conclusion: putting a sticker on the ball is just to kind of see the actual ball spin number and won't really affect other metrics as I thought. But both TM4 and GC2 are still not perfect as you will see mis shots with weird data here and there sometimes.
Your conclusion: you actually hit 20 yards more on carry. You're better than you think!

Since I don't live in that state anymore, if you can, please send me some sample shots hit by both GC Quad and TM3 or 4 (send me a screenshot of all data, like 10 random shots for any clubs you want to compare with TM having calculated ball spin), and I will compare and put them in the optimizer for you.

May be awhile. My retina detached in my good eye and I threw my back out. Basically a broken down mess but when I hit a ball in a few weeks I may take the time to capture the data. Truthfully I don’t care that much as I think they are the two best devices in the market but I was shocked on the bad reads for ball spin on more than a few occasions.

BTW, AboutGolf asked to borrow to compare my Quad numbers with theirs because it seems their algorithms are flawed. Hardware seems solid but they have some fine tuning to do. I’d love one of their wrap around screens but unfortunately I didn’t invest in BitCoin 2 years ago.
