  • Help deciding between Mevo+ and Skytrak

Due to corona crises all golf courts are still closed and probably will stay closed even longer. I am trying to decide to buy a simulator in the 2000,- range. The Skytrak is currently on sale.
I will use the sim mainly indoors at home. I have limited space and currently will just be able to hit into a net and use an ipad.

Those are the pro and cons which are important to me so far

    Skytrak:
    • Needs less space
    • currently on sale. But price is similar to Mevo+ anyway
    • a camera based system is supposed to work better indoors
    • is in stock (EU)
    Mevo+
    • Does read Angle of Attack which is very important to me
    • Comes with E6 and some courses
    • some spin readings seem to be off indoors. But this is not confirmed finally as far as I know
    • you don't have to pay for yearly subscriptions
    • I will be able to create the space for using it. But it's way more difficult in my situation.
    • Alignment seems to be more easy
At a first glance the Mevo+ seems better suited to my needs. But if the spin rate is off that might be a major problem.

Any additional thoughts are welcome !

If you have been looking at my posts about my Mevo+ having spin axis issues, I don’t think that is a good indication of what it can do. I believe my unit is defective. There are a lot of people with good reviews of the Mevo+.

      Yes I read your thread

Where are the good reviews that show spin axis to be accurate when compared to a camera based system?

But this one is decent. https://youtu.be/b8pEgsqPUkk Far from perfect.

pwade3 didn’t say you did. But you’ve shared what’s bad and I’m looking for reviews showing where spin axis is good. Everyone is. They are few and far between.

Spin axis in that vid are decent. The will never be great. Indoor radar will struggle with that. Just like ST HLA. It’s decent but not great and struggles sometimes. All units regardless what they are have there limitations. All of them. It’s narrowing it down to what you can accept. My ST overstates its flight curve by a fair bit. I know its wrong but I can live with it. My Mevo+ is broken, so I can’t even begin to give an opinion. TM4 has its limitations inside. Check out LeoModes site. Gives a great in-depth review of TM4 vs GCQ. Also have a look at this. Shows limitations of camera based systems. https://www.researchgate.net/publica...aunch_monitors

yanni I will give you my opinion of both units, since I own both the Skytrak and the Mevo+. My Mevo+ has been requested by Flightscope to be returned as there is an issue with reading longer clubs spin axis indoors. Irons are not an issue. Outdoors it has no such issues. It is only my opinion so take for what it is please.

        Skytrak:
        Pros
        Great value for its cost
        Decent accuracy
Can be used in tight places
        Has great data history
Its driving range is good with lots of options
        Easy to set up
        Portablity is good
        Battery is good
Lots of options for simulation play.

        Cons
Missed shots and misreads. Not a lot but enough to be bothersome.
Unit is close in proximity to hitting area
        Does not work well outdoors
        Alignment is finicky
Shot delay (which I don’t mind, mine is 3 seconds)
        Laser dot for ball
        Lefty Righty is a pain.
Curtain failure seems a bit more common now.
        yearly subscription

        Mevo+
        Pros

        Great outdoors
        easy of alignment
        no shot delay
        More data points then ST
        Portablity
        Has good mobile apps
Has good data both indoors and out except for spin axis indoors (in my case)
Never misses any shots indoor or out. I have had none.
Larger area to hit ball from
No issues for lefty righty if your tee is in the middle of your sim.
Support is fluid and easy. (They just might not tell you what you want to hear. Lol 😆)
        No yearly subscription
Has swing video option tied to your data points.

        Cons
        Very Poor battery
        Requires more space
I won’t get into the spin axis issues as my unit is faulty.
Needs it FS skills app to be put onto PC for Mevo+. It’s not available for it yet, just it’s mobile app.
Poor history of sessions as its hard to see all data at once. have to scroll up and down and sideways to see it all. Needs to be uploaded to spreadsheets.
TGC2019 will require an Ethernet connection to play (Mevo+ creates its own wifi to Laptop)

I may have missed some as doing this while having my coffee. ☕️
I have had my ST since 2015 and its been great. It’s value cannot be understated. Very happy. I have had my Mevo+ a very short time. It has worked better then expected outdoors. Indoors, If I had to give an opinion, it has worked really well. All its data seems very close to the ST, except the SA. If the SA numbers were decent, then it would be a great unit. If not, then it would be a bad idea to use indoors as it could cause you to ruin your swing. Having some degree of SA accuracy is needed. Does not have to be exact. One unit reading 1.5 R and another reading 1.0 left will not cause a swing change.
I hope this helps a little.
Just my opinion so please treat it as such. (Because my wife keeps telling me I’m wrong a lot Lol)
        Stay safe.

If I’m not mistaken I believe you can plug the mevo+ right into your computer so you won’t need another WiFi card or Ethernet

I believe plugging the Mevo into the computer only helps keep it charged. I could be wrong though, I had a look at their website but can’t find anything.

You can do both I believe if you look under the rubber band there is also another port there to have just a wired connection without using Wifi I could of misinterpreted it but that is what a representative told me

I actually use mine exclusively outdoors into a net/cage and don't have much problem as long as I keep it relatively shaded. Direct sunlight can sometimes be a bit wonky, but overall I actually don't really have issues using it outdoors on a mat. Just wanted to provide that perspective for anyone who might need to use it outdoors almost exclusively.

Yes. Let me correct my short (and poor) explanation. In my experience, it does not work well outside because of certain conditions. At my home course, the sun is always facing the lens of the ST until late evening. I would get about a 50% reading rate with that. Also, I damaged my lens (scratched) from the dirt from the divots hitting the lense when on grass. I also found in the winter, when on our mats, that would get wet and when you hit down with an iron, it would spray water (dirty water) onto the ST. As Coys997 explains, it might work well in certain conditions, just not mine. These are all things to consider.

GungHoGolf Is this possible? I don’t have mine to look.

Haven’t heard of that. I understood that to be a diagnostics port.
