HI everyone

Just seen this Putt View system and thought what a clever idea.

A putting green
A projector
Some software for projection lines of putts
Assemble at home in about an hour

I thought,

Small green costs about 1K
Top end projector costs about 1K
Software costs about 1k
Profit margin about 2k

Total 5k

checked out the price online, starts at 17K, wow

Even if I had cash to burn, I'd feel like a simpleton for buying that.

Think someone else will be selling a similar product for a fraction of the price soon?

It's an incredible system - we have a big one on the way for our new facility. Don't forget the touch-screen interface, the precision contoured green, and the cost of developing the software (computer vision, accurate ball physics - not simple stuff) in the first place.

Put in this way - I'm a software engineer, and a die-hard DIY'er, and the money we spent getting the big one (shipped from Germany) feels like a steal.

Yes I get the cost of the motorized greens that move and adjust to different breaks, but the home system for 17K doesn't move or adjust.

Its a set green and the projection lines just project set breaks of different lengths on a fixed green.

I must be missing something?

You're missing the software R&D cost. And the breaks it projects aren't "set" - you can position the ball anywhere on the surface, and putt to any of the multiple holes, and it calculates the break in real time (and follows your ball with a white line as it rolls). The software to pull this off takes a whole lot of dev time - which must be re-couped over a relatively low number of unit sales - and then maintained/updated/supported.
