  • My home Sim dilemmas. Help please!

So the indecision on my part is driving me crazy. Here are my dilemmas with my rational:
    1. Rapsodo MLM2PRO vs Skytrak.
    A. The Rapsodo is cheaper and will give spin, but I am not sure the radar portion will cause me issues with my room (TV to the left, couches to the right, ceiling fan above).
    B. The Skytrak is more expensive and requires more expensive Subscriptions, but can be had with a discount from a golf forum vendor saving me $300. Skytrak is camera based and will not care about what is in my room. I don't need to worry about 6' behind me to place the unit (not really an issue, but the Rapsoto will be just into the hall). More issues with the spousal unit.
    2. Peaks Tarps Theater curtains vs Amazon Blackout curtains. The theater curtains have a smaller attachment grommet, but are roughly 3 times the cost ($125 vs $50 each). I have read that the blackout curtains work fine, but do they...
    3. Acoustic tiles on the ceiling vs netting:
    A. Acoustic tiles are cheap, but may not stay up well using adhesive strips or glue. May need to use push pins. Acoustic tiles are squishy foam and not sure how many hits they can sustain before they look like an oily teenager that doesn't use proactive.
    B. A ceiling net will work, but looks ukky (granddaughter type word). Plus it hangs down and will need to be out of the way of the ceiling fan.
    4. Plastic TV cover. This seems to be a no brainer as TVs aren't cheap, but neither is the cover ($349 for the cover). I have 1 foot of clearance with driver swings in a lower arc, vs my normal upper arc.
    5. Use a projector, or just use the TV screen for now. Probably going to hold off on the projector for now. Not sure the full immersion affect is warranted at this stage.

    Decisions that have been made:
    1. Retractable screen (purchased and being manufactured, 20 days min). Retractable Drive rod 149" long with premium impact screen size 147" wide by 126" high with bottom weight bar sewn in pocket ($1177.44)
    2. Hitting mat. SigPro Softy 4'x7'. Waiting for shipping notification ($899.99)

This is the room I am working with (the exercise bike and junk will be relocated of course). I can relocate one theater couch if absolutely required: Click image for larger version

How deep is the room? I can’t see the couch or TV staying where they are.

Heavy blackout curtains do work fine if you’re talking about side protection. Accoustic tiles can take the occasional hit okay. They won’t get hit much at all on the ceiling. Also, you can glue them to cardboard or thin board like pegboard (same thickness without holes) and then attach that after it dries. Easier to remove if desired as well.

You can start with the TV, but even a $600-700 short throw projector (Benq, Optoma, etc) is going to be a huge step up. what software will you be running?

The room is 16' deep. The TV is on the wall behind the desk to the left. I am planning on the Rapsoto MLM2Pro and just preordered. Will use their software for now. I ordered the Amazon blackout curtains, thanks for the advice. The couch, is actually a home Theater loveseat on the right with the tissue box on it. I will swing towards the 3 windows. There is 4 feet between the loveseat and the window wall, but I can relocate that loveseat if an issue crops up.

One thing to remember, the simulator takes precedence. The couch can be tossed out the window, the tv in the trash, family needs -2nd place. Follow this advice and you'll be all alone, have the house all to yourself, except for tourney nights with the boys!

Thanks, very helpful. How long have you been divorced?

Which vendor? How are you mounting it, wall or ceiling?

that seems like it will be very narrow to swing within if I’m understanding the layout correctly. I would really consider moving the couch/desk to another room if possible.

I have the metechs retractable screen, it’s very loud and the bounce back can be pretty strong. Just something to think about if you do plan on keeping a couch/desk/tv in that immediate area.

And definitely get a projector if you can afford it. IMO, if you’re not projecting, the net return is the way to go vs an impact screen.
