High Handicap Wanting a Launch Monitor and Sim

I've got it narrowed down to a SkyTrak or GC2 but not sure if GC2 has as good of Sim options.
About Me:
* Left handed
* 20 handicap
* No ceiling space inside so backyard with a net is only option for now.
* Mainly would be practicing on virtual range but would be interested in some sim time.

Using the iPad for a Sim would be easiest for me. I've tried WGT game without a launch monitor and graphics are good enough for me. If Launch Monitor works well with that app I'd be fine with it but open to hearing about better options.

Any recommendations based on my needs?

GC2 is the superior unit. Its more accurate, has a larger area in which you can place the ball and has every other feature that Skytrak has. However, its 3 times the price of a skytrak.

Skytrak is a very good lower cost option. I own skytrak, and have no regrets. Its accurate, and relatively problem free now that a few firmware updates have been released. I get the occasional no-read on putts and chips when playing TGC, but not enough to bother me too much. Maybe 1-2 shots per round will fail to register and I have to re-hit.

For me, GC2 would have to drop to $3000 before I would consider switching from skytrak to GC2.


Both options will knock 10 shots off your handicap in the first couple months.

Do you play WGT at all or just TGC. I like the idea of only needing an iPad app to start out as opposed to buying a laptop to dedicate to golf.

I only use TGC and the Skytrak range app. I have tried E6, and also bought Perfect Golf...but TGC is far superior to the other sim options.

It would be nice to only need an ipad...but once you try TGC it is hard to live without it. Its so much fun to play real courses. And the online TGC tour that this forum hosts is great.

I also have a skytrak and used gc2's a ton. I agree with the above, GC2 would have to come down a lot to even consider it. I play to a 5 hdcp and am somewhat fairly consistent and I cannot tell a difference in accuracy between them. However, since you are using it outside, the GC2 will beat out the skytrak hands down if you don't block out the sunlight. So keep that in mind.

I don't know how robust the GC2 is or whether the GC2 protective case can take a blow.
But as a high handicapper I think it will be a case of when as opposed to if you hit the skytrak.
The ST protective case cannot take a hit from a errant shot and skytrak will not cover it under it's warranty.
So I would say if you can afford the GC2 then go with that.

My two cents is buy what you can afford. The GC2 is better but a lot of money. The Skytrak is good and less money. If you can afford the GC2 it's a no brainer.

I agree with mthunt. GC2 if affordable. ST is a good unit for the price.

Absolutely go GC2 if you can afford it.

I had ST, and moved to GC2. The biggest benefit of the latter is how well it picks up the ball. From darkness to bright sunlight, you will have no issues recognizing a ball. And the area in which it can see the ball is absolutely huge.

Thanks for the feedback. Here is what I'm thinking. GC2 used for around $4k if I can find it. Otherwise Skytrak but I am concerned about it working outdoors. Good thing I live in Washington so there will be plenty of cloudy days.

That's a perfect plan. Some lucky ones got used GC2s for around $3k last summer. But I have to say, although GC2 is still superior, the gap between GC2 and SkyTrak is definitely narrowing.
