  • Need suggestions on a simple build in my living area

I am looking to build a spot in my living area to hit balls in the winter, attached is the picture of the area I plan to utilize. My living area is 12 feet wide and has 8.5 feet high ceilings. So I can't hit more than a 5 or 6 iron here. There are three things I need here:
    - launch monitor (most probably SkyTrak)
    - hitting mat (most probably a 4x4 real feel mat)
    - hitting net (need a portable solution that can be assembled/disassembled in under 2-3 minutes)

I need suggestion on the hitting net, as I really want to hit "real golf balls" instead of foam/almost golf balls.

I was thinking of either using :

    1) the rukketnet net [1], which is very portable. My concern is its size. Its height is 7 feet. It takes a minute to assemble /disassemble which is its biggest plus point over net return , which I think takes 5 - 10 minutes to build/disassemble.

    2) purchase a 10x10 high impact net [2] . Add hooks on the side walls . This way I will cover a 10x10 area, which would make me feel better. I was also thinking that I could use this curtain framework [3] used by photographers and attach the net to that. For this to work , I would need the border of the net to be finished. Gourock netting provides a golf net like that which can be used [4]. Its an another idea to get the setup ready quickly.

I don't want to go with 1) because I want to work on my iron & wedge game over the winter to lock in my distance control (via SkyTrak). The RukketNet seems too short to be able to handle lob wedges.

So I prefer to use 2) if I can do it efficiently. How do you guys think I can make a 10x10 net work in this space so that its quick to take down and is secure. Will appreciate any feedback.

...and I though I was the only person crazy enough to build a hitting area in an apartment room (I live in a NYC apartment).
I just got started to build mine and bought the mini net return (waiting for the skytrak to be delivered tmrw). I only assembled it once and haven't disassembled it yet. But I think once you get used to it it can be done really fast. I would say under 5 minutes. I was just too afraid that one of the other nets is going to let a ball through at some point which would cause serious damage.

Hahaha.. Good to know I am not the only NewYorker doing it in their apartment

The Rukket Net has 2 layer of netting which gives me a lot of comfort that if I smack through it , there is a backup. But like Rukket , Net Return is 7 feet high (I think Net Return Pro is 7.5 feet) as well. I see that as an issue since I exclusively want to work on my short game within 150 yards and in. And I fear that the ball might pop over the net return if I really try to hit my lob wedge full strength.

I haven't hit lob wedge yet, only gap wedge which was fine. I think the more loft you have in your hands the closer you can stand to the net. Or you could just hang another net over the top pipe and hook it to the ceiling above were you stand just to be sure.
Where in NYC are you located?

The one thing that you should consider is the noise factor. Sure, if you are hitting wedges there's less noise but a full 5 iron will be loud. Your neighbours may not be too happy.

I agree with aja. I have a full fledged sim in my garage and my wife still complains. Think about the neighbors.

Yes , I am realizing now how loud it can be. So plan to use wedges with a real golf ball and almost/qolf ball for the irons. It should serve its purpose
