  • New Setup, advice please...

    Hi friends,

First off, thank you all!! I have read this forum intensely on and off for 10 months. I just joined so I could post as I believe I am getting closer to making a decision on my setup. I love the spirit of sharing and teamwork on the forum and hope I can contribute in the future. I will definitely be playing with you all on TGC and look forward to that!

    Ok, my space that I am working with in the basement is: 8' 8" H ( I am short 5'7" and can swing driver) x 10' 6" W x 13' D
    I have another option in basement that is 9' 4" H x 10' W x 13' D but it would be a little awkward, I could make it work.

I have reviewed many of your setups (envious of most of them). I personally like the level (not raised) versions that have the professional feel. I have a friend who has a backyard green company and he can order me all kinds of turf, so I am all set there!

My buddy has the HQ2 Screen and most of you have enjoyed that screen as well but I have some questions:
What size will I need? I am thinking 9' 6"W x 8' H so I have room for the bungie ties and slack on the bottom.

Looks like best practice is hitting area 10' from the screen.

The real concern I have is the projector. Based on the size of my screen, I am trying to figure out which projector or what type I need. I have a support beam (finished) about 16' back but that seems too far. I could anchor to ceiling, but based on screen size how far should that be? I checked out projector central but I need a manufacturer and model to plug into the calculator that's where I get lost. Looked at these 2 so far based on some recent posts in the forum Acer H7550ST & Benq TH682ST.

The space is not super bright but has recessed lighting.

    Swing Capture:
My biggest swing flaw in the past 10 years has been contact...just from lack of play and getting away from the fundamentals. This drives my ambition to build the simulator. Therefore, I do not think I need the clubhead data (P3Pro, HMT, Protee etc..). I just want accurate ball flight on the screen from a launch monitor (GC2, ES16, Skytrak)? As all of you, I would love both in a simple setup like ES16, but there is some maturing of that product that will take some time, its not proven yet...but promising. Because of the simple setup and accurate ball flight I have narrowed it down to GC2, Skytrak and Protee. I know there has been some frustration with Skytrak and the 3 second delay would annoy me. Therefore, we are left with Protee & GC2 which people seem generally happy with. The only reason I am averse to protee is the lighting requirements and the raised mat. It will be difficult to raise the mat with the height of my ceilings.

    Software:
Definitely all about TGC & Protee for online play and all the courses! So that is a big requirement. Looks like GC2, Protee, Skytrak and ES16 all work with TGC and Protee SW.

That's about it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for everything thus far!

I'll help in terms of the projector. Projector Central has several calculators. Use this one: http://www.projectorcentral.com/projectors.cfm as it allows you to enter your dimensions and it will return projectors that work for your room. I recommend the projector to be one of the last things you buy as your setup may change before you are done. Mount your screen and practice hitting a few balls with a light hanging in place of your projector to test for shadows. Once that works, order your projector.

As for your screen. Look up Spectrum Golf. They will build you a custom screen specific to your room size at a third the price of the HQ screen. The quality is top notch.

I talked to Par2Pro today. They have scheduled a call with Chris. I noticed most of you refer Corey. See what I can do and how Chris is.

I did not get to Corey either - worked with Preston. I think they're all pretty good. You should have a good experience.

With 13' Depth, are you sure that is deep enough to swing a driver and not hit the back wall or whatever is there? If you hitting position is 10'f I would think this is not enough room?

Good point! But behind the 13' it is open. Thanks for the thought!

    Hello Simulator Friends,

Today was a big day as I had the opportunity to play on a Protee thanks to BNorman58!! This experience really helped me as I was able to observe the space requirements and compare to my space. Also, we had the opportunity to chat and discuss all the different options out there. Due to my space constraints I have a couple options, GC2 and SkyTrak. Yesterday, I went to golfsmith and hit in their bays on the GC2. I feel like the accuracy of the GC2 and protee are equal. I am nervous about skytrak because there seems like too many variables to make it work correctly. I have read the Skytrak review posts so I know some are passionate in favor of it and some not so much. Getting closer to making a decision and the TGC software is cool!! Can't wait to get on and play some tournaments with you all! Keep you all posted on my progress.... Big Thanks to BNorman58 for being so generous and having me to his place to try protee (which still is an option)!! Another variable is trying to figure out if my daughter is righty or lefty...she is 6. She is lefty in everything but hits the ball around righty.
