  • My new Sim Setup!

I’ve been hanging around the forum for what seems like forever, but it's really only been a couple of months. I learned a lot from voraciously reading everything I can and even participating a bit. Before I tell more of my story, I want to thank DriverDivots, for selling me a quality GC2 at a great price, Aeroburner, for selling me TGC and providing general guidance and Preston, at Par2Pro for putting up with all my questions, many estimate revisions and mostly for calling me on a Sunday morning as he was heading to the mountains to Snowboard with his son! Par2Pro has awesome customer service.

I was hoping to write this post a month ago, but who has EVER been involved with a home construction project that actually finished when the contractor estimated it would be finished? That said, it’s done and fortunately I have an understanding wife who acquiesced to my request to take up half the gym with a Golf Simulator. The room is roughly 19’ x 22’, so ‘my half’ is 19’x 11’. 11’ is cutting it mighty close for width but Preston assured me it would be okay (he was right). The ceiling was not quite 9’, so we brought in a mechanical engineer and he devised a plan to cut some of the floor joists (Kitchen is above) and reinforce them with steel. You can see the ‘swing box’ in the accompanying pictures. You can also see the beam that runs across the basement, which we had boxed in. It made ceiling mount tricky so I’m projecting from the floor.

I’m still playing with and figuring out some of the final placement of the projector and the mat, but what you see here is pretty close to how it will look. Here are the equipment specs:

GC2 – early model. Pre-Apple Bluetooth. They wanted $500 to bring the BT up to Apple standard. I figure if I really want to use it with a pad, I can buy an Android for half the upgrade price. I know there’s been a lot of buzz about Foresight, but they took my unit in, serviced, bench checked and sent it back. I got in just before they implemented the registration fee.

Computer: I usually build all my computers, but in this case, due to space considerations, I went laptop: MSI GE72 Apache Pro070 173 Laptop Intel Core i7 16GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive 128GB Solid State and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M graphics w/3GB DDR5 Memory. This is a solid gaming laptop that was on sale at Best Buy during the holiday period. So far it seems to have plenty of horsepower and since it only is going to be used for one purpose, should last me.

Projector: BenQ HT2150ST Gaming Video Projector. In the short time I’ve had it running, I am super impressed with this projector. I think that ideally, given my space, I’d be better off with an Ultra Short Throw, but I really like this and am going to try to make it work. I had narrowed my choices to this and the Optoma 1800 – chose the BenQ for the zoom and glad I did. It is in a TrueGolf projector box for protection.

Mat: Real Feel Country Club Elite. No real experience with this yet.

Gaming: TGC. and Foresight FR1 software for the range and the fitting component. It was expensive so hopefully I get some good use out of it.
That’s my story. In the next couple of weeks, once I get everything figured out (and once the puppy can be trusted to be alone for more than ten minutes!) I hope to get my handicap, go through Q School and join the tour!

Very nicely done orangeman. If possible, can you discuss some of your dimensions, such as screen and projected image size, and distance from screen for your projector? I may need to do a floor mount also.I have also been in contact with Preston at Par2Pro for some quotes for my future build, and was curious about yours. I am also limited on space.

The Sim area is roughly 18' deep by 11' wide. Screen is 7 1/2 x 10. I've got the projector at 8' 8" and the hitting mat at 11' (extending back to 16' - 5x5 mat). I need the project that far back to get full screen at 4:3. If I had one do-over, it would be to go Ultra Short Throw instead of Short Throw.

Looks great! Transition from the first to second picture alone was already impressive, all finished up looks like a excellent set up

Is this great sim set up in Syracuse? If so, winter won't be that bad anymore, I guess.

Update: I returned the BenQ. It's a great projector and I really wanted to be able to use it. Crisp and bright and the optical zoom is great. But I didn't do a thorough enough job researching. The throw ratio wasn't right for my setup. Given my screen dimensions, I'm in 4:3 - 16:9 won't go floor to ceiling - and for that ratio, the BenQ needed 10 1/2 feet. That pushed the mat outside the hitting area I cut from the joists and also was far enough back that the beam was in danger (which means I was in danger of a ricochet). So, back to Projector Central for more research and more reading up in the Projector section of the forum. I landed on the Optoma GT1080 and it's working great. Fills the 4:3 ration at 6 1/2 feet. My only complaint, a minor one at that, is that it needs quite of bit of keystone correction. With Amazon's 30 day policy I can give it go for a couple of weeks, but I think this will be the keeper.
