Please help confirm proper screen width for 16:9 aspect ratio

  • Please help confirm proper screen width for 16:9 aspect ratio

    What I have learned from u guys and others is that if there is any chance to make a sim set up that supports a 16:9 ratio that is the way to go.
    If that is in fact true.... and I know my ceiling height within an inch or so (~8' 8" to 8'9") can I use the 1.77 multiplier to figure out the exact perfect screen width and then figure out from there what the best wall in my basement is to support a screen that width?

    So, if all of the above is correct the math would be the following (in inches): 105" (Ceiling ht) x 1.77 (16:9 multiplier) = 186" or 15' 6".

    Therefore for a ceiling height of 8' 9" requires a screen width of 15' 6" to achieve a 16:9 aspect ratio... is this correct or am I missing anything?

    Close enough. I got 15 feet 5 inches. 16/9 = 1.777777777. So now convert your height to decimals. 8/12= .6666666667

    so 8.6666667*1.777777777= 15.40 approx. .40*12 inches = 15 feet 5 inches approximately

      Height of 8'9" would equate to a width of 15'6 2/3". Height of 8'8" would equate to a width of 15'4 8/9". What are you planning on using to attach the screen to the ceiling and walls? You may need to account for that. If your projector has an offset, you might not be able to use the entire height.

        Kent To answer your questions:

        1) I honestly have not gotten to that level of detail yet but I would think I will be able to get the screen pretty tight to the ceiling height due to the fact that I am leaving my ceiling exposed and therefore will be able to put hardware between the joists above ceiling height rather than hanging below the joist thus taking away ceiling height.         2) As far as "offset", have to be honest I am still trying to understand all that goes into offset... I will admit I do not have a full grasp of what exactly offset is and when it occurs. What I am getting the feel for is that if there are any options to avoid having an offset I should do what I can to avoid having it. In fact, that is one of the reasons for the OP I put up. Again, without understanding offset completely what I was thinking is that if I am at 16:9 aspect ratio and I can align my ball on the mat so that it is dead center of the screen I would not need offset correct? So, I guess that is my goal right now cause my brain tells me that the sim and practice experience would be lesser if the ball strikes that screen in one spot yet the ball appears at a spot that is either to the left or right of the spot (according to where the offset is). Am I understanding this correctly?

          Offset has more to do with room size shellman. A guy literally has to scoot over in relation to his screen middle to avoid hitting the wall behind him with a club. TGC has offset built in for these poor souls. Lol, I'm one of them! Offset inside TGC will scoot the ball on peg over in relation to the rest of the picture world to give these guys a better feel where straight into screen is. From your videos and your sketches, if you end up with this problem then you have made an error in your build! Hope this helps.

            Good thing about using offset is, you are hitting towards edge, not the center.
            when the screen get damaged by hitting same spot over and over, just move the screen little bit and use fresh screen.
            you can even hang upside down, you have new screen!

              I think he's referring to projector vertical offset. The BenQ I had was 2" the optoma I'm using now I think is around 10". I have 12' ceiling, so for me it didn't matter, but In this case the less vertical offset, the better.

              Ok, so that said... here is my thoughts in trying to find the best possible location in my basement (including possibly some spots not included in the video).

              1) I want a 16:9 set up for the "immersive" sim experience. Therefore, I need to find a wall that will allow for a screen width of 15' 5" to 15' 7" (being that my ceiling height is going to be somewhere around 8' 8" after I put down a hitting mat).
              2) The ball "teeing" position should be approx 9' away from where the screen will be mounted/hanging.
              3) Ideally, I would set the screen up so that both a Right & a Left handed golfer would be able to take a full swing at the ball from the position the ball is set up at in # 2 above in order to avoid having any offset.

                  So that is really funny cause I am stressed out about not having a great sim situation! I will trust you that you can see into the future and that it's gonna be good when it all said and done. I am still having a hard time seeing it.

                  I do not have a projector yet. As a matter of fact I have NOTHING yet.... on purpose because I don't want to screw this up and am trying to ask as many questions as possible to do all that I can to not let that happen.

                  The only thing I am pretty much dead set on is a used GC2, the "direct from mill" screen and a gaming desktop with at least a 1060 vid card. Everything else is in the research phase.

                    I would probably look at the BenQ 2150st for your situation. Projectorcentral.com calculator will help u a lot
