  • Simulator Build in New Home in Denver

    Hi Everybody

New to the forums but I am really excited about the house that we are starting to build. It is probably a full year out before we can move in and start actually using the simulator but some planning way in advance never hurt. Some quick details on the build:

    * Basement will 10’ high
    * The layout of the walls in the picture below cannot be moved. I have to work with what I have.

All in, I pretty much have an 18’ wide by 13’ deep room. Really the depth is 17’ as the room is open to the 4’ wide hallway. However, the hallway will have carpet while the room will be all differing heights of turf (some putting green with fringe-like grass around the edges). I did just realize that the one thing I missed in the drawings below is that the screen will need to be about 1' away from the wall so if I want to be 10' away, that pushes the tee back 1' and even closer to that corner wall. Not sure how big of an issue that is though....

I plan to hopefully get a 20’ long direct from mill screen that I will attach to the 18’ long wall. I presume my picture will be about 16’ wide by 9’ tall. I really would like to go with that aspect ratio giving the full immersive experience. Anybody see any issues with this?

I plan to mount the short throw projector (still need to figure that out) directly above the tee.

I plan to purchase a used GC2 or SkyTrak. Still weighing options.

Given the proposed layout below (note that each grey cell is 1’ x 1’), coupled with the 3d renderings, do you guys see any concerns given your vast knowledge?

I have a full year to plan this out so hoping to get some great deals come black Friday on the projector and maybe even turf.

    Thanks in advance!!

It's pretty tight. Is there no way to get rid of what looks like a closet there? The room would be 1000 times better without it and you'll wish it wasn't there every time you use it. Just my 2 cents.

Agree with mthunt that room was the first hint that stood out to me.

Thanks for the replies. I completely hear you both. Unfortunately, those walls are not moving unless I really want to simply not have a golf simulator. The wifey so far has been incredibly flexible, letting me strip out one of the bedrooms and it's closet in the basement to build this sim. I agree that it is not ideal but it is something I will sadly just have to deal with. I don't think rotating the room 90 degrees is ideal as I would get less width so I think I should stick with that set up right? All things being considered, I think it will still be better than what I had originally planned. Again, any advice is greatly appreciated. Sadly...moving walls is impossible.

If it really gets in the way, moving the mat one foot to the left won't hurt too much and the center strike of the ball would be a little of center on the screen. Not terrible...

Honestly, with that wall there I'd consider it a deal breaker. You will likely develop compensations in your swing having it there. I've went from a cramped setup to a roomy one. The cramped setup screwed up my swing so bad and I'm still dealing with correcting it. You could consider offsetting the hitting location but I don't know that it will buy you much. Rotating it 90 might be a better option as neither is ideal. IMO you need to work on removing that wall/closet. Here's an idea, get the wifey hooked on golf and that room will vanish happily.

Fair point and I am definitely trying to get her hooked...just no luck so far. It's a frustrating game! I think I am going to lay out a hypothetical sim room in my yard with my garage acting as that closet that is jutting out. Worse comes to worse I will move the tee off spot another foot to the left. There is plenty of room behind the golfer to move left of center. I just ideally wanted to be hitting dead center.

Quick question...I want to maximize as much as the 18' by 10' high wall as possible. If I go 16x9 aspect ratio, and have a screen that is about 9.5' high, then that would mean my width would be approx 16'9", leaving me total of about 8" on both sides of the screen to the wall. Is this sufficient for doing the brackets, bungee cords and tarp clips?

Wow... I cannot believe it has been over a year since I last posted but I am finally now starting to construct the golf simulator as our house is close to being complete. Today I installed the foundation for the floor representing pressure-treated two-by-fours laying flat attached to the concrete foundation and on top of those I installed OSB. Once my builder has someone come in and paint I will install a carpet padding, putting in turf and fringe.

I estimate it will take another month to finish up the install but I will keep adding pictures as I work for the process. Let me know if anybody has any questions and thanks again for this entire forum as it is really helped me best design the layout of this project.

I actually really like the Uneeker but just found out about it unfortunately. I ended up going with a factory refurbished / certified GC2. I think that should work for my purpose. Doing a BenQ TH167ST for the projector, direct from mill screen, and using the TFD Putting Elite turf from turffactorydirect as my putting and hitting service (with gel insert for hitting area).

3.3.2020 Update. This weekend I finally had the chance to get the turf laid. Started with 1/4" thick carpet padding and then laid out the TFD Putting Elite turf from Turf Factory Direct. I even laid it right over the gel pad (idea from the "DIY Real Feel Golf Mat for only $271.50" thread). I still need to cut the holes out for the 3 putting holes.

Over the next 2 weeks I plan to install the king sized 3" memory foam mattress pad, baseball netting, and then the direct from the mill screen (in that order) using tarp clips, bungee cords and angle iron. I also will be doing a fringe around the green using the artificial turf that is being installed in my yard next week.

                Update from 3/14 weekend

I was able to finish installing the impact screen, the baseball netting behind the impact screen, and the king size 3 in wide memory foam behind the netting.

I was concerned about the memory foam ripping so I used 1 x 4 inch wood planks and pressure mounted the top of the foam between the two and screw them together. I then put some carpet padding over the wood just as an extra precaution.

The baseball netting and impact screen wall mounted to the sides and top with angle iron using tarp clips and small bungee cords.

The memory foam is approximately 1 inch off the wall while the baseball netting and impact screen are both touching each other and are approximately 4 inches in front of the memory foam.

Lastly, I put 4' x 8' of eggshell acoustic foam on the ceiling for flop shots. Hopefully that will be sufficient. We will find out.

Next on the install plan is the black curtains on the sides along with a black sheeting across the top.

You room is looking good! You might want to lower your memory foam though. My screen is only about 8’ away from ball so might be a bit different but the impact height is lower on screen than I expected, especially lower lofted clubs, driver and the occasional thin shot🙂 The wedges that hit higher up on screen probably won’t need the extra cushion as much.

4/4/2020 Update: I have finally finished the build out. I ended up skipping the curtains idea as I really liked this dynamic: https://golfsimulatorforum.com/filed...3&d=1581985851

I purchased 7 queen sized 3" thick memory foam mattress toppers, cut them accordingly, spray glued them to Hardboard Tempered Panels (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hardboar...2780/202404545), and stapled black fabric around them. I tried using clips like this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to attach the panels and they worked great for the vertical walls. For the ceiling, the were an absolute nightmare so I used strong velcro instead and it worked great. I wish I would have used the velcro everywhere.

Final pics have been attached. The first 3 pics are with all the lights turned on in the sim. The final pic is just with the spotlight for the hitting area on. Thanks again to everybody who helped. This turned out better than I expected and I am thrilled. If anybody has any questions, please let me know.

Are you talking about the foam pads? I described how they were made in the text.

I am asking where you got the toppers. I know how you did it and saw links to the hangers and panels but not the mattress toppers. Did you find a source that is a good price or was it more in the $100x7 range?

Right on. I see now. Honestly, just find the cheapest 3" thick toppers you can find. I purchased mine through walmart for $57 a piece (purchased 7 total and needed all 7 for my ceiling and side walls). Total cost was $400. Right now in the link below they are almost $90 a piece. Not a good deal IMO. Hopefully with some research you can find some better deals. I am not sure the side panels even need memory foam so there is an opportunity for savings there too. Just go with regular 3" think foam toppers instead of memory foam. The only place IMO that really needs memory foam is the middle 2 or 3 panels. Hope that helps!
