  • Simulator space in detached shop building

I'm literally in my infancy on this. Would like to have something in place by the winter months (November timeframe).

    Purpose / Intent:
Im on my mid 30s. Pretty average Joe 25 handicap weekend warrior golfer. I've done it off and on some years more than others since my teens. My oldest son just turned 14 this summer, and has really caught the bug. I can't keep him off the course. Kid played over 200 holes at our local course this week.

My primary goal for this space is to provide winter practice space, with an emphasis on game improvement data. I certainly like the idea of playing recreational simulations, but accuracy of data, and ideally some combination of club and ball data would be ideal.

    Approach:
I'm a DIY guy to the core. I'm pretty apt at anything from construction / woodworking, to electrical engineering, to software developer. I'm always looking for ways to save some cash by doing things myself / cobbling together solutions, and frankly I enjoy doing it.

    Space Details:
I've got a detached 36x36 steel pole barn. It's got a full concrete floor. Fully insulated, electrical service / water, heat and AC. Bottom of roof trusses are 12 feet up. I've out an area where there's an unused garage door, that's about 10 feet wide by 16 feet long. I could go a little bigger if prudent / necessary. Trying to avoid encrosching too far into the middle of the building.

    Initial Thoughts:
I'm still trying to decide on what to do for sim hardware. I was pretty enamored by the idea of the SkyTrak, but have become a little more intrigued by the ProTee stuff. In terms of budget, anything beyond $3k is getting out of hand for me. My dad has an optishot2 system at his place. While fun to play with, the limitations become obvious pretty quickly.

I'll try to keep this thread updated as a continue to navigate.

"I was pretty enamored by the idea of the SkyTrak"

with a 3k budget buying the ST will take a huge piece of that. You will be looking at 750 remaining after buying the GIP software and full metal jacket case.

You could have a Mat, net, and monitor with that remaining. I tried it but only fed my need for bigger and more expensive.

I ended up throwing away the maxfli net we had and buying a impact screen and projector. Made our outfit seem more real.

Its just my 2 cents and I will put it back in my pocket. Last December I to started with a garage and budget of 3k (blew thru it quickly). Here is our list.

    Mat: 300
    Impact screen 104
various odds and ends for the screen and hitting area: 250
    ST: 2K
    FMJ: 135
    GIP software: 100
    Projector: 600
    Gaming PC 650
    TGC: 800
    Simulator balls: 20 biweekly

Portable AC (optional:-)) Out is a 400sq ft 325.

My son was 14 at the time we started as well. With our setup we spend alot of rainy,to hot, and/or cold days out there.

Please DM me if you have any questions.

My own 2 cents, I didn't go in with a budget per se but wanted to keep it somewhat economical so i decided to get all the components to make sure I could scale if I wanted. I got the projector, computer, impact screen, trimmings etc then i built a floor that hinges up to the wall in my garage so I can still park my car. I live in Canada so i had to invest in a heating system for my garage. The 1 part i cheaped out on was the actual simulator. I went with the Rmotion ($500 cdn) to make sure i wanted to really do this. My plan was to go to the skytrak after a few months but honestly I think I am going stick with the rmotion until i decide to go with a GC2. The r-motion was finicky at first but i actually have it close to my actual swing, if i hit a bad shot it pushes it, if i turn my hands over to quick it hooks. I will say it is not as dramatic as IRL but its close enough for me to work on my swing understand if i a missing shots. If you want to keep this as budget as as you can go with the projector, screen (it is way more real than a net) and try out the rmotion. If you really like it the rmotion syncs with the skytrak to give you the club face info so its not a lost investment. Once again just this guys thoughts, good luck.
