  • How to hang Memory Foam

    Hi fellow Simmers,

I purchassed a super king size piece of memory foam (about 3 inch think) and hung it from the pole behind the impact screen. works a treat, reduces the noise and takes most of the impact and now the balls just drop to the floor in front of the screen instead of bouncing back at me.

I haven't been into the garage for about a week until last night when i discovered the foam had tore itself from the bungies and was sat in a pile behind the screen.

I hung it by piercing holes into the foam and forcing the bungy through and then attaching the bungies to the pole to hang.

How do you guys hang yours?

Very curious as this is something I have planned for my sim room
are grommets needed? Or something more for long term use?

I'm thinking i get a quilt cover attach grommets to it and put the foam in that and then use the bungies through the foam and cover. hopefully the weight will then be taken by the cover and not the foam....

curious on how you guys have done it

If i remember correctly, I think someone may have sandwiched it between two pieces of wood.

I have a 6 inch foam mattress topper laid against the wall then secured to the wall via rope.

I’m curious... do you think it’s feasible to use the memory foam as an impact screen? I’ve been thinking about possible ways to reduce sound and was wondering about both memory foam hung with clamps, and/or mounting it directly to a backboard.

I tried that but the ball killed foam. I put the foam against plywood and hit balls. It was 3 inches think. Total fail.

I attached mine to wood. The pic is upside down but works like a charm.

Thanks for all your replies. From them I have 2 ideas. The first is to get 2 planks of wood and clamp them to the top end of the mattress then bungee the whole thing to the top of the frame. The second idea will be to put the topper into a quilt cover and punch grommets through the whole thing and then hang it. I think I will go for option 2 as option 1 might create a hard area near the top for a ball to hit and bounce back from.

if anyone has any other ideas then please post it for us all to share.

Old post here but figured I would share what I did in case folks find it useful. I just bought some plastic spring clamps (link below) that conveniently have a small punch hole in the handle. I clamped a bunch across the top of the memory foam and then zip-tied to my EMT frame. Working great!

Thanks MJ328 - I may use those claps. Can you tell me, is that a 3" thick memory foam, or 2"? Also, what did that do for reducing bounce back from your screen? I assume your screen hangs in front of that, correct? Also, how far in front of that memory foam is your actual screen hanging? Which screen do you have, and how much bounce back are you seeing?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm trying to limit bounceback in my small space 15' maximum from wall to wall, if I mount my archery/impact screen 8"-12" out from the back wall, I'm trying to see how this would memory foam would fit in, and what it would do for bounceback? I'm hoping to get a very limited bounceback, and then ball drop, something like 12"-20" from the screen. I've played on other sims and had balls flying back at me from all directions as the bounce back was horrendous, and I don't want to have that in my own setup.

                      Thanks in advance,
                      -Brett

Here's what I did. I took two 2x2 pieces of wood and screwed them together, sandwiching the memory foam in the middle. Then i used several small bungees to hang, and wrapped those around the EMT to hang freely. It's worked well so far, and no signs of tearing.

There's a possibility the ball will hit the wood and bounce back hard isn't it?

How thick is your memory foam? Does having the foam reduce the amount of space you need behind the screen?

It's 1.5". It definitely helps absorb impact. I also have 2 moving blankets behind there. the screen doesn't move more than 6" on impact.

Does it not push the screen out a little given you're securing it to the same EMT top piece that the screen is attached to?

If it is at all, it's not noticable. It just hangs free back there.
