I am in the middle of building my simulator and need advice. I have purchased a Carl's 8.5'X10' screen and do not have a projector yet. Would mounting on ceiling or floor be better? Which projector would be best" Tee to screen will be in the 8' range. I will also be using the setup for movies, games and football games when not hitting. This whole resolution, distance etc etc is extremely confusing to me. Obviously I would like the whole screen to be filled when using in all applications. PLEASE any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance

You won’t be able to fill it for movies at 16:9. You’ll run your sim at 4:3 and movies will fill the width at 16:9, but more empty space above and below.
Projectors: Optoma GT1080darbee and BENQ HT2150ST (I think they have one more short throw that people use as well).
Go to projector central (google it) to see how far away you’d mount it. Go with whichever distance you think is better. Benq is probably a little higher quality, but must be mounted further away. -
I chose to mount my projector from the ceiling so it would be out of the way and I'm glad I did. If it's on the floor you may be putting over it and you'll definitely be walking around it and trying not to kick it while picking up balls to take back to the hitting mat. Not gonna lie though, it's intimidating at first swinging while knowing that projector is right above you.Comment

I ceiling mounted my projector for the same reason as FirGir and it’s been working out great. Also, if your Tee to Screen is 8’, then you need a short throw projector with a throw ratio less than .8 (i.e., 8’ / 10’).Comment

Godfather what about ESPN and such for games. Are they in 16:9 or 4:3? I am 100% stupid when it comes to this stuff .Comment

TV/Movie formats (for the most part) including ESPN, Sports casts, movies, TV shows are all going to be 16:9, so you will get letter boxed effect for any of those and most sims you can use at 4:3 aspect ratio.
As for mounting on the ceiling or using a floor standing projector. For most people, I think the ceiling mount is better, however if you are really tall and need all the celing space you can get then maybe a floor mount might be worth considering. I'm 5'11 have an average plane and follow through, and celing mount works great, but I have a buddy who is 6'8 thats in my regular foursome and I don't really let him swing in my setup outside of chip shots and punches.Comment

For some context If you are using the screen for mostly sim, then the letter boxing isnt that bad, if you are using the screen for mostly movies and want to play sim a bit, I'd advise finding a space that can fit a 16:9 aspect ratio, that being said, Here's a some pic of my setup in my garage/mancave, where I'm just casually practicing so I put the sim in a seperate window and my youtube tv is running a game in the background and its not too bad for viewing.Comment

liltwigy - projector is BenQ MX819ST - and I celing Mounted it, kind of between me and the golf ball and like a foot or two behind me in this pic. I think its discontinued now which is abummer cause for my purposes it was a good value coming in around 700 dollars.

Its technically a net, but a fine knit net, the upside is it was really cheap 300 dollars, for my 12.5ft x9.5ft and I think it might even be cheaper now, buti figured eventually if I wanted to replace it for 300 dollars i couldnt go wrong, and I have no regrets, It's held up fairly well, considering the little amount of time and cost I spent putting it together. The downside is that there is a bit of graininess with the image, to me its not a big deal but if you have high expectations on image quality I wouldnt recommend it.

I have a optoma gt1080darbee I'm gonna be selling. It will do 16x9 or 4/3. U could run 4/3 fill up your height then use your GPU settings to scale the sides to fit. I run 12x8 with my projector mounted about 7' from screen. PM me if interested.Comment
