  • My potential sim room size concerns

I know there are a lot of threads on this but wanted some advice specific to my room. Right now I have a garage setup but I want to bring it indoors for a permanent simulator space. However, my room dimensions are:

    13’1” long
    11’11” wide
8’11” tall (could raise to 10’ as there is a drop ceiling in the finished basement)

I have a GCQuad but the 13’1” length is what is worrying me. Any thoughts, comments, advice?

    Thank you!!

Tight, but possible. Keeping the screen as close as possible to the wall will be key. I would just open up the ceiling. 8’11 isn’t bad for some. I can swing driver in 9’ room fine, but I find by the end of the winter, I’m swinging flatter. Hitting a cut shot is different inside with fear of hitting the ceiling. 10’ would be awesome.

I would say to hit driver you going to need 10 foot ceilings. As for length it going to depend on what you are hitting into. I have a SkyTrak and use it in a 13.5 foot length. At first I was hitting into a net return (the net return sits 40 inches off the wall) this made it super tight and i used to brush the impact screen every so often. I have since set up a low profile 10x7'9" impact screen that sits less the 12 inches off the wall and now I have plenty of room to swing freely. Now me being 5'8 this is enough room for me. If you are taller or have longer reach this might be an issue.

I cant speak for the GcQuad but I do believe this a camera based system and camera based monitors require less depth compared to say a trackman. But it is always best to see what the mfg recommends.

I have the quad as well and I swing about 7 feet away from the screen but you could do closer if needed.. the quad can read the ball properly from any distance to the screen...plan on having the screen at least 1ft from the wall.. may need to put a memory foam mattress behind it.

Length and width are fine. I have a very similar room size with a GC2 and have no issues. Ceiling at 8’ 11” is likely an issue for 3 wood, driver....

Take a 48" alignment stick and swing it in the space your going to use. If you can swing it without hitting anything (or worry of hitting anything) then your good for all your clubs unless you got some 48"+ club you use. If you hit something with it there will be less damage to you and or whatever you hit!

Thank you everyone. Raising the drop ceiling should not be a big deal, I wanted to make sure 13'1" is enough length to swing a driver before I spend the money on the build out in the room. We have a larger space in the basement but it would cost a lot more to raise that ceiling and would only get me to 9'5" and would require duct work being moved and other things.

I’ve heard of people installing in rooms 13 feet long but I believe you need 6-7 feet behind you to the back wall which leaves only 6-7 to the wall in front. What about a screen? Find a way to add some to the length or you’ll struggle IMO

If it were me, I'd spend the extra money on the space that could be made bigger. You already have a Quad, so big $ has already been spent. The setup you mention "might" be ok for 1 person, but certainly nobody else could be in there unless huddled in a corner.

This is true 1 person only sim room I can confirm that. There is no way in my 13.5x12 space can another person stand and be comfortable while someone else is golfing.

I am OK if only one person can be in the room at a time, but I want to make sure it will work long term. My house is weird, the only room big enough for a true sim is the master bedroom and I prefer to stay married. Also, the cost to "make" room anywhere else may be way too much money (moving ductwork, electrical in the drop ceiling main room). However, I also do not want to spend the money to finish off the smaller 13' room if it wont really work either.

My room is 11x14. 10’ ceiling. Starting from back wall I have 3.5’ to the 4’ deep fiberbuilt, then a further 3.5’ to the screen. Screen is backed by a net return that I modified to make it 7” shallower (still 3’ deep)....14’ total.

I’m 6’3” swinging a 46” M1 Driver. It works, but that Driver backswing is a bit nerve-racking, everything else is fine. You’re at 13’, but screen won’t be as deep, so it’s doable, but tight. Fix the ceiling tho!

                    Good luck!

Revisiting this. I am stuck between keeping my current garage setup or moving it into the small room listed above or trying a bigger build out of the big room in my basement. Anyone have any recommendations in N.J. who do this type of thing? I feel like I need someone to come take a look to help me understand the costs etc but not sure who I would start with. A general contractor?

What are you doing on the screen and cage? We have some cool setups. I can get you a layout and some options. Thx Chip Golfsimulatorsite

Update: I think I am going to try to raise the ceiling in the main room instead. That room is 19 feet long and 15 feet wide. One issue is that the drop ceiling is 7'8", most of which I can raise to 9'6" but the area where the screen will be will remain at 7'8" (or possibly up to 8'4") due to some duct work. I think 9'6" will be good for a standard driver length but will the 7'8" to 8'4" impact area be too short for wedges? I could also put some padding or something a foot or two above the screen. Thanks everyone

Depends on how close you are going to be from the screen. If you are more than 8'(maybe even less), probably going to be an issue with higher lofted wedges.
