  • Indoor putting green build

I have been wanting to have a little indoor putting green to be able to practice at night, on breaks while working from home, etc. I looked into birdieball, big moss and some other pre-made ones but I really wanted it to be more realistic and for the ball to drop into a real cup.

I spent the past two months or so contemplating the design, going through turf samples, and trying to make the design easy to build. I ended up going with Starpro MPT putting turf and paid a lot extra to buy some pretty well finished 1 x 12's for the outer frame to save the time and effort of trying to straighten and finish rough lumber.

Today was the day it all came together. It's 12' x 4' with three regulation metal cups. Total cost was about $500 and $300 of that was the Starpro turf, although I did use a bunch of tools and screws I already had.

The toughest part was the turf. I ordered it from Home Depot because it was about $50 cheaper than ordering direct from Starpro when you include shipping costs. Surprisingly, the hardest part of the build for me was the turf. I ordered a 15 x 4 piece expecting to simply need to chop 3 feet off the end. Well it turns out they sent me a piece that was 4'3" wide and not square, so it took me a solid 2 hours to cut it perfectly square with freaking scissors inches at a time. Clean up from cutting all that turf was a nightmare too but well worth it.

Here are some pictures of the build. I did it all in a single day.

Looks great. Why not add some outboard adjustable feet that that you can screw up and down with a power drill to create break?

I actually want it dead straight. I find that for me, practicing putting is more about stroke. If I can sink 5-10 foot straight putts, I don't have issues reading greens or adjusting for breaks.

But if I do want to add some break at some point, apparently it's really easy to do using ziplocs bags with some sand, or there is a product called a break snake. You just slip these under the turf (which isn't glued down).

That is gorgeous, abenjami. The stained perimeter looks terrific. HOW do you like the StarPro green? Recommend?

Thanks. I stained it that color because I will soon be replacing the grey laminate you see with real wood close to the stain color, so I wanted it to match once the room is complete.

The StarPro green is very good but to be honest it's not amazing like I hoped. I do like that it has a rubber backing that holds it in place without needing glue, staples, etc. But the surface itself is a little too thick and "carpety" for my taste. The ball rolls good though and i'm happy.

If I had to do it again, I might get some cheaper turf like this stuff:

I got a sample of this stuff and I think the ball would roll just as good for 50% of the cost of the StarPro.

Another thing I would recommend is don't make one of these unless you are going at least 4 feet wide.

3 feet wouldn't be wide enough if you want a hole in the dead middle of the green for straight putts because you won't have enough space behind you to stand without your heels having to be on the side rail.

Their shipping cost was about $300 for 15'x25'. Other companies charge $100 at most.

Yikes, you are right. I just priced out a 4x15 strip which is what I would have needed and it came to $207.20 for the turf plus $348.68 shipping. That's ludicrous.

Agreed. That was the same shipping for the 15x17 I just priced out. If I'm going to pay that much I'll look for better turf.

The frame was made using 1x6 boards, not 1x12. They are 5.5 inches high when the boards are turned on their sides.
