  • Starting my sim, few questions :)

Hi all, been browsing for a while and thought I'll just do it. It will be in my garage but the space isn't ideal. Height isn't really a problem i might have to slightly change the roof structure. The length also isn't a problem but the width is only about 9 feet. My questions are, is it worth doing with that width ( seen threads on this site which say yes and no, and also can anybody recommend me a projector? My screen will be 2.3 by 2.5 meters and I plan to have the projector above the tee which will be around 8 feet back.

At least check out the benq th671st. Im happy with that one but I was happy hitting into a net for 3 years too.

I was first setup in a 10' wide space. I was offset from the center about a foot or so. 9' is getting tight. You will be very close to the edge of your screen. But if you have your heart set on setting up a sim, you will find a way to make it work.

If you are offset that far, the projector will more than likely be in the backswing since it will probably be mounted in the middle of the area. that may be an issue.

I didn't think about that wbond. I guess you could put the projector on the ground in a terrashield.

9’ width should be ok for irons but might be too tight for for a driver. A driver averages 45”, a 6’ tall person would have an average arm length slightly longer than 3’, leaving a couple of feet from the facing wall, then your back swing will get the club head very close to the wall behind you.

Thanks for the replies lads, wbond I was planning on having the projector directly above the tee, does it have to be in line with the centre of the screen?

If my projector isn't centered it wouldn't fill the screen correctly. Kind of like trapezoid in shape. Definitely not a go. I believe Kal is correct ground mount.

There are also some pretty decent Epson Projectors that have a keystone type adjustment that will allow you to mount to the side. I have that type setup and it has worked great.. 3,600 ANSI Lumens.

My BenQ 1085ST has horizontal keystone adjustment so you can easily place the projector completely off to the side. It’s a valuable feature in many installations.

My build is 9' 3" wide at the hitting area and I'm very happy with it. It's just a bare bones setup though and used primarily by me and the kids. I'm offset of course but at 6' tall I can swing Driver in it, and I've definitely bounced the Driver heel off the back wall on the follow through on a couple of the later nights. If you're taller than say 6' 2", or you have friends that you plan to have over that are, things will get a lot more complicated at that width - or if you have righty and lefty swinging friends it will be tough to manage. I'm using a SkyTrak which works well with that width but not sure what happens with a different launch monitor.
Can you swing your least favorite clubs in your space and slowly work your way up to the longer clubs and see where your tee needs to be to hit Driver and miss the back wall - knowing you're going to graze the back wall as you figure it out? Also, I would recommend doing the math and figuring out what your image size is going to be and make sure you'll be happy with it - and that's what I was trying to do in the first pic with the white painter's cloth hung where the screen is now. You likely already know that at the same image width for both aspect ratios you'll get more image height going with a 4:3 aspect ratio versus 16:9.

How far is your hitting area away from the screen. My garage is also about 10 1/2 ft wide, and does the job ... however, my hitting area is probably only about 6ish from the my screen (which is currently carpet at the moment)
