  • Garage Excavation - Build (Some Questions)

I have skytrak and TGC2019; I've been in contact with uneekor though. I will be finishing the room after I pour concrete. I quit racing rally cars and this room was previously just used for parts. Only a 7 foot ceiling though...Excavated area is about 19'x14'

A few questions regarding lightning. My plan is to put in a drop ceiling, but instead of using tiles, i'm going to make the grids 4'x8' and using foam insulation as the tiles. I have a 54" vinyl printer so I'm going to print a sky on the adhesive vinyl. This should kill two birds with one stone. Same money so I wont have to buy tiles, and insulation using as little head room as possible.

How much lighting do you think i should put in and where? I plan on lightning most of the room with just track lightning as I dont have room for can lights. Concrete ceiling.... I had the idea of putting black everywhere around the screen and even on the ceiling for the first few feet... but i'm not sure that's necessary. My budget isn't huge, but i have the tools and skills to basically do whatever I want. So I'm taking suggestions, pictures of good looking setups would be appreciated.

Not sure that it's necessary to create a "false sky" for your sim. Most sim play takes place under lower light so the projector can do its thing and you get a decent image on the screen. At that point no on cares or notices what is overhead.

    My sim ceiling is black.

Also, any grid ceiling automatically reduces the ceiling height by a minimum of 4 or so inches.

You don't need much light for a sim. One set of lights for normal daytime room lighting, then whatever specific lighting that your sim uses.

Looks like you are in the states... I guess LED lighting hasn't made it there yet. Here in Europe you can get extremely thin and extremely economical LED light fixtures that are about the thickness of the ceiling tile itself. They are called LED "panels" Track lights, unless specifically for the Skytrak, not sure why you'd bother.

Yeah, good point about the LEDs. I don't need to create one a sky, but I do have to add insulation. I was going to buy 4x8' foam sheets. Instead of adding a finished ceiling under that, I was thinking of just printing a design on the foam sheets.

In terms of fire safety and building code considerations foam insulation should be protected from exposure in some way. Don't think it's safe to just leave it exposed.

Usually requires at least one layer of drywall. You could install a suspended drywall ceiling and put Fiberglas or equivalent above it.
