    Cathedral Ceiling Screen Question

I am in the last part of planning my simulator room and I was hoping for some feedback from everyone on my screen. I am getting a Carls Premium screen, and will mount it 1' from my back wall shown in this picture. The impact screen area is 10'2" wide, and is 7'7" when it starts to angle in.

Would you recommend I get the 10' x 7.7" (one of the premium screen sizes from carls is 10' x 7.7"...a perfect fit for my space) screen and just have it fit nicely in that rectangular area? This leaves a larger gap up above the impact screen. Or, should I get a little creative and get a 10' x 8.5' screen and have it cut off slightly at the top right and top left corners? I am not sure how much projection display I would lose, but it would give me a bit more height.

In either case, what would you recommend doing in that area above the screen? I am thinking of using some black fabric (same color as the curtains I am installing on each wall to cover the windows that will just cover that whole area and make it black.

I am putting Trueturf on the whole floor, making it a big putting green with 4 holes. At my strike zone I am cutting out a 12" x 24" rectangle in the floor and putting in a gel mat, so I will have a real feel striking zone that is completely flush with my putting green. I am using one roll of Truetuft, so that will be the same material for the putting area and the hitting zone. I have ordered a GC2, and I am doing final research on the projector and computer now.

Any help would be appreciated from you experts.

    Thanks.

How are you planning to attach the screen? If using angle iron, i would go with picture three. You can still buy a rectangular screen, then just fold over the corners to follow the slope of the ceiling and attach the screen to the angle iron with tarp clips and adjustable ball bungees. Then you can trim out the top portion with black fabric and have the image start at the bottom of the slope like you have in pic 1.

On the sides I don't have a ton of room since the screen is 10' and my space is 10'2", so I was thinking of doing small eye screws and ball bungees. On the top I could use an angle iron and bungees. On the angled part I could also use a angle iron slightly away from the wall, drape the screen over and then have some eye screws placed on the wall behind the screen to give some tension on that section.

Think that is worth the extra work and cost to have the screen go up a bit higher?

How are you planning to protect the side walls ? 2 inch of space is not enough, it will surely make a dent if you shank one. Just curious

I have bought blackout curtains from blackoutcurtains.com. They are on a an aluminium track, so when I am using the simulator I will have them extended across both walls. That is for wall protection, and also to block out the light. There is a exterior door right to the right of where I was standing when I took that pic (it would be behind the hitting area) so I need the curtains to block out light from all three windows and the door. I am also getting an electronic blackout shade for the skylight...that will be impossible to hit with a ball because it is right above the hitting area but I will need to block the light.

I would do picture #1. Keep things simple as I too had a small space for my build. I have a 7x7 Carl's premium and not sure how it would even like folding over for what may be un-usable space at the top. You could go with some side protection and baffling for the top. I think the important thing is to plan out how far you plan to be hit from the screen. I hit 7 feet from screen and have a similar room wall cutout (basically a recessed square). I ended up building a 7.7x.7.7x1 EMT cage for my build and just sliding it into the space. Search for my build thread for pics and example.

Hitting that close really take side walls out of danger, but I can tell you that you'll want to plan some padding behind the Carl's if you are going to be that close. Memory foam is great for sound dampening and eliminating rebounds. Also, you may want to consider something for those windows (protection and light darkening). Good luck. Can't wait to see finished product!

The depth of my room is nearly 18', so I was planning on having the impact area 9' from the screen. With your screen being 7' tall, do you find that you are hitting it above the screen a lot? I could move the hitting ares as far forward as needed, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have a flatter swing, and have taken lots of driver swings in my space and have a lot of room, so I am not worried about hitting the ceiling.

Also - just looked at your sim room. Looks amazing. I am going to paint my room dark slate or something along those lines as well.

Your room is deeper than mine so you should be fine. Honestly, I don't take full lob or sand wedge shots so have never come close to hitting the ceiling. Plus I am pretty close to my screen. Maybe some softer pitch shots but no flops! All other clubs are good to go.

The key for me was that I wanted to get as close as possible to my screen without casting any shadows so you want to get the measurements on your projector just right. Makes it more immersive for me to be close along with greatly minimizing any potential errant shots, Thus my comment on giving your Carl's some padding behind for diffusing any rebounds.
Working...
