So I am just about done with my simulator setup. There were several issues that I have to deal with and thought I would start a thread that might save some of you guys some time and frustration.
First of all here are my specs:
18 ft depth and 13 ft wide room with 10 foot ceilings.
Uneekor Launch Monitor
BenQ MW632ST projector
4x4 Fiberbuilt Hitting Mat
Carl's 8x10.5 Impact Screen + Enclosure (Viewable screen 121.33 x 91 inches. 5 foot depth (as opposed to the 10 foot option)
I received my Fiberbuilt mat first. the 1x4 hitting area is extremely joint friendly. That comes in a separate package. The rubber mat and the 3x4 stance area comes rolled up in a heavy duty shrink wrap. It is VERY heavy. I had issues moving it with a dolly. No problem dragging it a few feet here and there for adjustment once it is setup but it is extremely heavy duty. Better than any driving range mat that you ever hit on.
I am 6'0" tall with a standard M5 TaylorMade driver. In order to have enough clearance for my backswing the ball needs to be ~8' from the wall behind you when you are standing at address. Anything less than that will risk a flat swinger hitting the wall on their backswing.
The Carl's enclosure comes with a few hurdles. The assembly of the frame is relatively easy. Make sure to measure the final recommended dimensions. I jumped the gun and started attaching the enclosure and screen before realizing that my measurements were off. It was a pain adjusting the dimensions after the enclosure is Velcro-ed onto the frame.
I was planning on placing the ball 8 feet away from the impact screen. This will not work with my enclosure because of the 5 foot overhang. Driver follow through will hit the top of the frame. I have to position the ball 9'10" away in order to have enough clearance to swing comfortably.
The 5 foot overhand also compromises the projector height. You have to drop it down almost in line with the top of the impact screen or else the top of the image is cut off. I tried to have it sit at around 9'6" (screen is about 8'6" tall) but that won't work. I had to move the projector directly above my hands at address. It works but I wanted to have it further back so that it would be out of my line of sight. That didn't work due to the top of the enclosure cutting off the image. Many projectors have vertical keystoning but this only helps position the projector higher if there is no overhang blocking the image.
I bought a twin sized memory foam topper. I cut it to fit into an old sleeping bag with double zippers. I placed the memory foam into the sleeping bag and used the extra bungee cords to hang it from the 2 zippers behind the screen. It definitely helps with bounce back. A 7 iron would bounce all the way back to me 10 feet away. With the memory foam the same 7i swing will bounce back about 4-5 feet.
My 54 degree wedge hits the very top of the impact screen and a couple shots hit the top of the enclosure. No big deal but thought it might be worth mentioning.
