  • Random Question: Static Electricity

For whatever reason whenever I touch my laptop in my sim setup I get shocked by static electricity. I worry a little about the computer, though the chassis should do a pretty good job of isolating the shock from the motherboard, but mostly it's just really annoying. I don't have the problem anywhere else in the house with the same computer, so I'm guessing it's the hitting/putting turf that is causing me to accumulate the charge. Any one have any good ideas about how to mitigate the issue? It's every single time I touch my computer and it's been driving me crazy.

Get your self a humidifier, I had to do the same thing, air is too dry.

ESD shoes... electrostatic dissipative shoes. They used a lot in technology fields to limit exactly what you are experiencing. I got a pair of sketchers, they work very well but aren’t totally effective if the environment gets excessively dry. If I run my heater for a couple hours my garage can get very dry and the problem still exists albeit not as bad.

I use a wireless keyboard and mouse so the only time I have to touch my laptop is to turn it on, thus eliminating touching it while playing golf on my simulator.

Something we found that works is
          1. make sure your CPU is on a rubber mat.
          2. 2 part water 1 part liquid fabric softener in a spray bottle. Spray on the floor around your sim bay. Smells good to!

The fabric softener did the trick, great tip! I think I used a lot less fabric softener than 1:2 water, but it still worked flawlessly.

Thank you for the suggestions! I am going to try the fabric softener 1st and if that doesn't work will go the humidifier route. It's not just touching the computer, its the lights too. I even here the static when I touch the ball with my club. Its bad...
