I am in the finishing stages of building out my garage and don't know the best place to store my 5x5 hitting mat. We use the garage for our cars and would like to know what others have down to store their mats. Ideally I'd like to create something that allows the mat to stand up straight and rest against a wall so it takes up the least space possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine made a frame for the mat. I think he used 1/2” plywood, set the mat on top and screwed it to the plywood then framed around the edges to a height just below the mat surface. Put small casters on one side with drawer pulls on the other to move it around easily. Then used a bungee or something to put through the drawer pulls to keep it upright against the wall.

That is exactly what I did. This is a Fiberbuilt hitting strip & motivogolf stance mat. I put big castors on one side & a handle to make it easy to lift up. It is way more heavy than I would have guessed. Part of the weight is the Fiberbuilt mat, that thing has some weight to it.Originally posted by wbond View PostA friend of mine made a frame for the mat. I had plans for all types of contraptions and wall mounts, then looked at the floor space where the vehicles actually parked. It seemed too easy and works for my 4 minute setup.
Cut your stance mats so you can leave them on the floor. Slide the mats over 18" and straddle them with your vehicle. Zero issues after 3 seasons. Fiberbuilt mats are heavy and these 4'x3' section don't move during a round yet slide into place without much effort. This was a custom order, but it has worked as planned. Essentially, I cut a 4'x9' into 3 sections, which is easy for fiberbuilt mat that is composed of 1' underlay mats. The fiberbuilt layout is in the shape of a T. 10'x3' putting mat and a 4'x9' stance mat.
We don't worry about the 1.75" thick shag artificial grass rugs on either side of the putting area. Drive/park on them and you only really have a single compressed parked tire spot on each side. Snow wasn't an issue as the grass is plastic and made for outdoor use.

You mentioned this was a custom order, are you referring to the Fiberbuilt mat? I thought you said you cut the mat? If you bought the standard 9x4 Fiberbuilt mat off their website, was it easy to cut? Great looking setup and looking to replicate, but with the 7x4 fiberbuilt.

I like this setup and may head down this same path. I was pondering the possibility of driving over the rubber foundation and simply removing and replacing the mat that sits on top. I think I would have to remove some of the edging pieces to make this work. Did you give that any consideration? I don't have a Fiberbuilt with the rubber base today - mine is a smaller one with the styrofoam inserts. Just curious if you gave that any thought?

You obviously have not seen how my wife gets a vehicle in/out of my garage :-)Originally posted by Will View PostI had plans for all types of contraptions and wall mounts, then looked at the floor space where the vehicles actually parked. It seemed too easy and works for my 4 minute setup.

With individual garage doors, it's pretty easy to straddle a 3' wide stance mat.
I completely respect your situation and am glad my wife gives a sh.
I was parked very close to the mat in the first image. We know where our mirrors have to be as we go through the garage doorway. She hasn't said anything about pulling in, and I have never seen her up on the mat.Last edited by Will; 08-12-2020, 08:07 PM.

It's like a really thick runner with a soft spot at the end. It hasn't been a problem and that is with loading and unloading a 3 year old from that side. You know the soft spot is there and may step on or beside the tee. My wife walks her bike on this 14' "runner" and loads it onto her vehicle. So, utility of the space is still there.
My wife said she has had the thought or concern of possibly rolling an ankle with a softer surface. But, it hasn't been an issue. She said she just steps around. When asked about driving in, she said she doesn't see how she could even hit the raised mat (3x4 fiberbuilt) or center mat (3x14). The garage door makes her line up on the tire lines. It's more like 24"wide tire line space for her right tires (not 18" as stated earlier).
I was worried about leaving mats under the vehicles, especially during the winter. But, this also hasn't been an issue yet. Snow and rain normally drip from the vehicle sides. The artificial shag grass up front has been great and dried out eventually. Ohio hasn't had a lot of 12" snow days in a long while and our vehicles aren't leaking oil.

The fiberbuilt mats are heavy yet limp, so you can't really just lift a 50lb (guesstimate) 3'x4' section without it being awkward. Maybe you could underlay the base with something more elaborate, like three ridged 3x4 sections. I don't think they'll move when you start swinging..Last edited by Will; 08-16-2020, 01:45 PM.Uneekor QED / The Golf Club 2019

When I had my 5x5 CCE mat in the garage I would just lean it against the wall when I wasn't using it. Then I would roll up the little bit of turf carpet I had at the base of the screen and my wife's car would fit pretty perfectly within the opening of the net.
Not ideal and a pain in the butt to set up every time but it worked. Can't wait to get in my new house and have a dedicated setup though.
