  • Height of projected image above the floor level

Hi. I am trying to plan my layout for a new build Golf SIM/Multipurpose room at the moment and getting great info from this site but one thing I am struggling with that will help me determine screen size/height, projector selection and location is the height of the bottom of the projected image on the screen above the finished floor level. Do you all project the image so it is the same level as your floor or mat or higher up? Based upon a 10 deg driver launch angle (not that I am even close to being that good) at 3 m (10ft) back from the screen then the ball should hit the screen around 500 to 600mm above the floor so the bottom of the image might be OK around this level or slighting lower.

I'm just interested to hear what height others have actually set their image up at as it seems to be one missing piece of information I am struggling to find, especially as the projected image will be for TV/Movies as well as Golf SIM. Golf SIM level will take precedence obviously.

The location of the image has nothing to do with where the ball is hitting the screen. Some people have the image stretch all the way to the bottom. Others (like me) are not able to fill the entire screen with the image so there's some blank space at the top and/or bottom.

Why are you concerned with where the ball will hit the screen in relation to the image?

@land This site https://www.projectorcentral.com/Vie...r-pro.htm#calchttps can help you determine where to mount your projector. But obviously you'll need to have selected a projector first. I bought a package deal from AllSportsSystems and they supplied a VieweSonic PS501X with the package that I bought.

I recommend doing it in the opposite order: First determine where you can hang a projector, and then select one that fits those specs. You don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a projector that you can't install in the right spot because of limitations with your space. Get the math down first, and then shop around.

I have my projector mounted on the ceiling behind the golfer. A consideration for me was to minimize any shadows on the projected image. So I did the geometry and figured that having the bottom of the image about 8 inches above the floor worked out for me. Only very tall golfers can block the projected image...and only then just a tiny bit.

I put a small ramp from the floor to the screen bottom and covered it if very high artificial grass. It deflects really low shots and also helps greatly in returning balls that drop from the screen.

Unless you're able to recess the screen to floor connection below grade(the floor) I think you'll have to provide some covering for the edge of the screen.
I'm planning to ramp up the grass/carpet in front of the screen about 4-5 inches to cover the clips that are attaching the screen to the floor.
If the screen is pushed back at impact maybe the ball will fall between the screen and the carpet?
I've got some concerns about bounce back if the ball hits to close to the edge of the screen as well, but have to get to the point where I can hit some practice shots.Click image for larger version

It is all personal preference and what does your room allow. Most of the software out there does not know your room size so where the ball hits screen and where illustration of ball starts from on the screen is usually slightly off. Creative Golf and FSX2020 have the abilities for you to enter your SIM setup measurements which allows the ball to start on screen where the ball made impact on the screen which is cool. I use an Epson 5050 that has lens shift and zoom capabilities so depending on what I am using projector for I can adjust image on screen with a remote. If you get a projector without these capabilities your basically stuck with how its mounted. My image does not take up my entire screen, I use 4:3 aspect ratio. My image is 5 inches above floor and probably 1.5 feet below ceiling.

                Thanks for all the comments.

I actually have a Benq W1070 already that I use daily in my lounge. I will try and use that in the Golf SIM and upgrade to something else in my lounge.

I figured out I can mount it about 4.9m back from the screen to give me a roughly 3.8m wide x 2.1m high image whilst keeping the nits about 48 so hopefully brightness sufficient. Some of those numbers are from memory so might not be exact. I plan to locate the tee centre of the screen with projector on this line. I know there will be a slight player shadow off to the bottom left of the screen but I will live with that until the W1070 gives up and then invest in a ST projector in the future.

I'm going to buy a 4:3 screen anyway even though projecting 16:9 so can play with the height but planning on somewhere around 5 to 8" as some have mentioned above

I like the idea of the ramp at the bottom. I will be building a frame to mount the screen and was planning to fix some memory foam strips on the frame and cover in fabric to assist any miss hits rebounding back but a ramp might help as well. Probably act as a useful ball return as well.

                Thanks again

Is it possible to mount a projector off center? The lane in my basement with the highest ceiling is not where I am able to mount the projector. I would estimate that for a right handed golfer, the projector would be roughly directly behind the back, about 3'-5' away. That would be about 10' or so from the screen. Is that workable?
