  • Advice on Projector 4:3 aspect ratio

Hi, I’m almost done with my sim build. Just received my Skytrak today and purchased my gaming computer. My setup is a little restricted because of the room size. I have an 8 ft high by 10 feet wide enclosure. My ceiling height where I will be installing the screen enclosure is 8’- 7”. I have more ce8ling height where I will be swing my club but will only be 7 to 7.5 feet from the impact screen. I plan on mounting a short throw projector at approximately 6’-4” away from the screen with a low profile ceiling mount. It will be above my head slightly forward and away from any swing path. Because of the restrictions I have to go with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The actual screen size is 110 inches wide by 91 inches high. I have looked at both the optoma gt1080hdr and the new optoma zh406st. The latter is laser and almost $1000 more. Because of budget I’m leaning on the gt1080. There is also a viewsonic ps501x which is strictly 4:3 and only $500. I’m really concerned that I will not be happy with the picture quality but I cannot change the screen size and to fit the width with the gt 1080 at 110 inch I would need to be 4 feet away which will not work. Has anyone used the gt1080 in 4:3 and what was your experience? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Can't speak to the Optomas, but if you get one of my BenQ projectors (https://store.gunghogolf.com/BenQ-TH...NEW-p265749740) and have an Nvidia graphics card, you can dial in the exact aspect ratio to match your screen. It has a little longer throw, but personally I'd be more comfortable with the projector behind the ball than in front of it. BenQs have significantly smoother vertical keystone adjustment, too - no noticeable image degradation if you need to mount it a little higher than the top of the screen and adjust keystone.

Only advantage of lasers is fewer lamp changes, but lamps last around 3,000 hrs and are not that expensive or hard to swap out.

Thanks Ron, if I use the Ben q at 6’11” I will fill the width of my screen of 110 inches but will only fill 62 inches of the 91 inches of height. How do you think this will look. Also, the offset is only 2 inches vs 13 inches. I’m not too experienced to understand how this will work but appreciate any advice.

When using the throw calculator, only look at your 91" of height. We can dial in the width to any number to fit. 2" offset is much easier to deal with (less keystone needed) than 13" of offset (another reason I prefer BenQ over most Optomas).

I'm pretty sure your numbers are a little off, the gt1080 would be about 6ft away to fill 110" width. The BenQ TH671st would have to be a little over 9ft away. I have the same screen size as you and my ball is 10.5ft away with the projector above my head just in front of me. I can say what Ron says above is true as I have the TH671st and it's mounted 10ft high tilted down to project on a 7ft high screen, using keystone correction it looks great.

I'd suggest www.projectorcentral.com where it will show you where the projector you're interested in needs to be.

Are we all talking 4:3 or 16:9?

4:3 - according to projector central for 110" width the TH671st could be between 8'-5" and 10'-2" - image of 110"x83". It says the gt1080 would be 6'-1" away to fill same screen. I'm new at this but these 2 projectors are the ones I was choosing from and I chose the BenQ for the preferred distance and it had zoom capability which made installation very easy. The lens of my projector is 9'-6" away from screen. The screen I have is Carls preferred supposed to be 10' x 7'-7", but the actual screen measures 112" x 84", idk maybe they count the border and grommets in their measurements.

Looking at Rons comments above, it seems like like he is familiar with making a custom resolution to match your screen, which I have no idea how to do, My Radeon RX5600 graphics card is just putting out the 1920x1080 and the projector is set on user1 profile 4:3 Mode. If I switch it to 16:9 the image maintains height but the width extends out and down the sides of the walls.

Hi Spaz, how is the image using 4:3?

A 16:9 projector can always be ran on a 4:3 resolution via graphics card settings. It just blacks out the sides.
