  • My new Build and Swing capture system

Summary of my Sim build on the cheap. Happy to share what has worked well and some challenges. If i factored in my time for research I think I could have a Trackman and a new building for a sim.

Craigslist and Ebay are your friend.

$100, Frame ¾” EMT Conduit and fittings from Makerpipe.com. Most people use 1” but my ¾ is holding up an impact screen, net and two layers of moving blankets with no issue. It also folds up
$50, Impact screen, bleached drop cloth from Harbor Freight and a sewing machine from Craigslist (CL)
$50 I had the net and moving blankets but add another $50
$125, Projector, Benq MX 819ST short throw, Ebay
$20, Projector floor cover, some plywood, cheap grizzly grass carpet and two pc cooling fans. This was a huge savings. The amount they want for these covers is ridiculous. Happy to share my design
    Hitting area;
$100 Mat, I had the mat but it is nothing special
$30 mat surround, ½ carpet tiles, CL great deal.
$20, hitting strips, 2x4x1/4 inch plywood and 1 linear foot of putting green from Home Depot. $20 makes five strips. Still on my first one and it is holding up great. Need to cut the wood and glue the turf. Again happy to help
$300, PC and Monitors, CL baby. Software Co. moving off shore. I7 processor three monitors and stand. I will need to upgrade graphics card.
$200, Swing capture camera system, Kinovia software which is free, two Kayeton cameras. The system captures both facing and down the line swings at 120 frames per second. It will not freezer club head at impact but is a good tool to look at how you are swinging the club. You open Kinovia twice one for recording and one for playback. You can watch your swing automatically after your shot.
    $2,000 Skytrack, no discount
    $200, misc cables, ropes etc.
    $3,195 total.

I have included a couple of links for the cameras below. Many options.

Freese at impact meaning that you can advance one frame at a time to see the exact position of the club head at impact. I think you need something above 1,000 fps for that level of detail.

Congrats Homer ! Looks great and did it very cost effectively! I did a cheap build as well but it doesn't look nearly as nice as yours. I'm interested in your swing camera setup as well, so if you have any links to share, that would be great!

https://www.kinovea.org/ is the camera software, it is free and used by many pro organizations. The camera links are above. I tried using DSLR, action cams and iPhones. I was unable to get a decent frame rate

Thanks Man. I've made some progress here and have the same cameras and kinovea setup. I'm struggling seeing everything at one. I have a gaming lap top and an external monitor. Then the projector/screen How do I use all of those screens at once with skytrak and kinovea? thanks!

Great setup, I'm also doing a low-budget setup. I've tried 4 different projectors (tried before buy, except for my first mistake). I can't use a ceiling mount, so have to go with a floor model.
Searched in vain for a short-throw that can fill my 108" x 108" screen from 8' or less. What's your screen size? How far back is your projector?
I'm building my own protective housing for it too - I'd really appreciate if you'd share your plans for that. In preparation for building it, I received my USB fans today!

Your screen looks relatively square, if you are - can you help with instructions on how you configured it? Sorry, I know those are a lot of questions, but it's winter in Colorado and I'm anxious to get my set-up looking like I want.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!
          Thank you, -- P.J.

Where were you able to get this one linear foot of putting green from Home Depot? Thanks!

In regards to my projector, my screen is 8x8 and my protector is 8'-4" from the screen. It fills the screen vertically but does go a little wide. When using Skytrack software on an iPad it is basically square and fits.

My projector protector is made from the same 1/4" plywood I use for my hitting strips. It is 24" long by 18" wide and 5" high. It is full height for 12" and then tapers down for the remaining 12". I used some small strips of scrap wood, hot glue and screws to put together. Covered in Grizzly Grass from HD which is cheap.

I have hit the projector box several times with no issue.

Have the same projector but with Optishot. Waiting on my overdue SkyTrak. Please post some pictures of SkyTrak range and any simulator software you are using. BTW my frame is also 3/4” EMT. No issues so far.

Any chance you can show a screen or video of the swing software? That sounds like it will be my next project.
