TLDR – Guy thanks everyone for the help, wants to show off his setup. Pictures and links to more pictures and parts list included. --
I want to thank everyone here for posting all that they have about their experiences with different launch monitors, screens, software, hitting mats, etc. Reading it all and learning from others has allowed me to maximize my space, my dollars, my fun and has helped me play my first round of better than bogey golf in over 20 years.
I needed to share with some people who could appreciate it, so I am making this post to tell my story, show off my setup and offer anyone who wants to know what worked for me with my constraints the chance to just ask. Now, this in no way compares to some of the setups I have seen, but I am super pleased with the way it has turned out.
The room is my man cave with darts, small bar, beer fridge and a mini fridge, ice maker, M.A.M.E. Arcade machine for old school video games, a pool table with a DIY poker table / beer pong top and the golf simulator. I have the room wired in the walls and ceiling for sound. It is a tight space for all of that, so we can’t be doing other things when hitting golf balls for safety reasons.
The golf simulator has evolved over the last 8 months, as I tried various things. I have 8 and a half feet of height from bare floor to finished ceiling. I am 5’7” and can swing all my clubs, and have had others much taller than me able to do so too. The only club hit on the ceiling so far has been a scrape and it was after the swing when the person brought his club back out of his post swing pose and sort of cast it high and it drug along the ceiling. People do take time to trust themselves and really swing with the height constraint though (indoor swing syndrome).
I started with an Optishot and moved up to a Skytrak but do not regret starting out with the Optishot, other than it got me to more fully commit and rework the space. The Skytrak has treated me well but I do have a lingering problem where it will stop reading putts during a round (putts only) until I reset the unit with a quick power off and on, so if anyone has a fix for that let me know.
I have tried a DIY divot action mat, tried voice controls (works but I like the DIY control box better), I have had nets and tarps in different configurations, I make use of photo backdrops and have been designing my local course in TCS 2019 (steam and PC version). I just need to finish planting and it will be out of beta. I have Kinovea and some PS3eye cameras working for video swing capture and replay.
Thanks again to mthunt, golfallyear, ChadGolf, GungHoGolf, jpotas, inorkuo, joan, wbond, sirish19, friendBOMBER, @a98cr125 and everyone who posts here for making this forum a daily read for me. Thanks to AllSportSystems too for their help.
Here is link to my site where I have posted more pictures and file with all of the key components for my build with links to them online: http://www.lopresti.net/GolfSim/all.html
I don’t have the details for the mat I already had but it was a sub $100 one. All told I have $6500 into the golf related components including software, screens, nets, Launch monitor with case, projector, hitting strip, padding, tees, balls and all.
