  • New build, need ceiling help

Ok, so I have pivoted from my original garage build now putting this project in my basement. Excuse the mess in the basement, I'm just getting started.

My only real issue is clearance. As you can see from pics, I just took out the drop ceiling that was there, and the amount of space I have from floor to the ceiling trusses is 8'3, which I'm not sure is enough to swing driver.

So I saw on here where someone removed the trusses and put a steel beam in. Can that person give me some more details as I can't find that post.

In the second pic, I would have 9'3 inches all the way up to the subfloor on the second floor. I'm thinking about just putting in one tray ceiling for my swing path and then drywalling the rest of the basement onto the trusses which would still really only give me 8' ceilings all the way around. But much better than the drop ceiling that is there.

Also, how far do you recommend the hitting zone be behind the screen?

Few pics of current situation. That is an old 120 inch screen from Screen Innovations for my theater room with the Epson projector. Plan to reuse the projector, wish I could re-use the screen.

I am in the same current situation, and the best option for my set up was to dig the basement deeper. Not ideal but really no other cost effective option.

8'3" is definitely not enough for a driver and even long irons. You may be able to use a pitching wedge and 9 iron and that is it. You definitely need 9' if you are an average height person. I am 5'7" and I need at minimum 8'8" for the driver and luckily I have 9'4" of head room.

You need 8" to 10" behind the screen.

So I got a little impatient and started Demo of the drop ceiling tnite.

I am a 2 handicap, 6’3, and was swinging driver and 2 it
ron without hitting the trusses. I’m sure I was compensating or adjusting my swing, but so far so good. Will lose a few more inches once drywall goes up and I have the hitting pad, so am still gonna have my GC over to figure out a solution.

here is a pic, and a pic of dimensions.

        I’m gonna roll with:

custom SQ impact13’ screen from par2pro to fill up the whole wall
exisisting epson projector (how far back do I mount it)
some sort of cushions panels on either side that already comes out 80 inches
get a 15 X 18 ft fescue turf to cover the whole area
        uneekor monitor

thats as far as I have planned/budgeted for now

            Couple more questions:

1: I want to put down a roll of either fescue or putting green for flooring to cover the entire area of where I will have the simulator. It's going on a concrete slab. Should I put something in between the turf and the slab? Also, which should I go with? Fescue or a putting green?

2: Can someone post a link to their favorite hitting mat?

3: Can someone post a link to acoustic tiles they like? I want to use those instead of drapes on each side wall that measures 80 inches as well as for ceiling panels extending from the screen to the projector.

4: Is noise canceling dry-wall worth it?

5: Lighting recommendations? The existing light you see will have to come out, and I will want to figure out lighting before dry-wall goes up. Any suggestions? I'll do recessed cans throughout the basement, but what specifically for the sim area?

Foam exercise mats are great for putting under the turf. The ones that come in interlocking squares. For turf you can do some longer turf (like "rough") under the screen to prevent the ball from bouncing around a lot after a shot and then shorter turf elsewhere. But to each their own regarding that.
