  • Sim build ceiling height help needed

    I am in a pretty good position regarding my build. I am building it in a corner of my pole barn. I have radiant in floor heat pex tubing in the concrete floor (no boiler, ect.yet), My room size will be 16' x 20' and have the Mevo+ launch monitor. The walls are not build yet, so if you think this is too small, please let me know. One of my Son's is left handed, which is one of the reasons I thought the Mevo+ would work best for me for hitting right or left handed. The impact screen is 8' tall and 10.5' wide.

    The pole barn has 14' ceilings, which is way more than is needed. My concern is the addition cubic feet of space to heat and especially cool. I was considering putting in some sort of ceiling to make the space smaller and easier/cheaper/quicker to heat and cool in the future.

    1). Would you keep the 14' ceiling height or lower it?

    For those who suggest lowering it:

    2). What is the minimum height I should make it (I do have a 6' 5" brother-in-law that can swing up to a 4 hybrid in my 9' garage only tapping the ceiling once)
    3). Any ideas as to what to use or how to build a lowered ceiling? (it will need to be insulated above, I'm in Minnesota).

    Any and all suggestions and ideas are really appreciated.

    Thanks

    Things you never hear from Golf Sim folks:
    1. My Screen is too big;
    2. My video Card is too fast;
    3. My ceilings are too high; .......
    Seriously though, I might drop a bit if only to add some insulation in the ceiling to help with the cooling and heating.....Would not go lower than 12' in that case. Absolutely no lower than 10 feet given you have the choice. Would not have to be fancy.

    Is the ceiling vaulted or is it flat at 14 ft . since you have 16 x 20 space, I would get a larger impact screen.You could go 15 x 9 or 15 x 10. post some pics of the ceiling . Have you built an enclosure for the screen? you can floor mount, or frame mount the projector as well . I would keep ceiling at 12 ft min. thx

      Currently it’s an unfinished open 14’ pole barn truss (will be flat) ceiling. Screen is already bought.

          My initial thought was to make the ceiling 10’ high. That would enable me to insulate it and have a touch over 3’ of storage area above.
          anyone have a 10’ ceiling in there simulator and wish it were higher? If so, for what reasons?

          thanks

            10 ft should be fine, unless you have shaq over to play!

              It is all about perceptions. 10 feet removes all likely possibility of hitting a ceiling with Driver (yes - other than Shaq). But that does not mean you do not "see" the ceiling or that it may impact your swing. I have lived a sub-9 foot reality in the basement and we are moving to the garage to get the full 10 feet. Even so it has not impacted my swing (I only use hybrid and lower in the basement) but it dramatically influences my wife's swing (she abbreviates her follow through and it had carried through to the course early on in the season). So while there is no "rule" per se other than a general acceptance that 10 feet "should" be good in most situations, it really is situation/individual dependent.

              Personally though, if it were me and I had the choice - I would be going 12 feet all day long. Just removes yet another variable. My two cents.

                JASONREG is right. you want to feel 100% comfortable swinging. If you have any doubt in your mind that you may or may not hit the ceiling, it will mess with your swing.
