  • Golf Barn / Simulator Build

In the process of building out a golf sim in my barn that was built in the late 1800s.

    The plans so far…

I built out a subfloor using 2’x2’ DRICORE OSB panels that are an inch thick. Super quick to put together and they’re the perfect height for the mats I’m using. Once carpeted I believe the transition from the hitting strip to the subfloor will be perfect for putting. The overall dimensions of the floor is 16’x12’ - but I may add additional panels behind the hitting area so the stance mats and hitting strip are completely contained within the subfloor.

For the carpet, I was initially going to go with a dark grey Camry carpet, but I was a bit worried about the durability. Instead, I’m going with indoor/outdoor dark grey marine carpet. After ordering a sample I think it rolls great, and it will be perfect as both a landing area and putting surface.

As for the mats I ordered two 4x5 black stance mats from a seller on eBay… still waiting on the second one. Then I went with what looks to be a Quattro hitting strip. I say “what looks to be” because it was ordered from a seller on Alibaba that I found through this thread. Shipping was super fast and so far it feels great to hit from.

The screen is a Preferred Finished Impact Screen and was ordered from Shop Indoor Golf. It’s a true 16:9 aspect ratio at 16 feet by 9 feet. The frame was built using plans from Gung Ho Golf and it’s 4 feet deep. I previously used the plans for a smaller build that I had at my office last year and thought it worked great. Having come from a 10' wide frame, this thing feels so much more massive, super immersive.

The frame is wrapped in Commando Cloth that I ordered through Canvas ETC. They had the best price I could find. I ended up getting 13 yards off a 54” wide roll for $105 shipped. I’m still waiting for some long foam wedges for the inside corners and the top of the frame.

I will be using Skytrak with TGC 2019.

    What’s next?

Finish off the subfloor. Add carpet and place a cup directly in line with the hitting strip, and then a cup on either side of the 16-foot platform to practice some longer putts.

Buy a new short-throw projector that I can mount to the enclosure. The projector I currently have was laying around the office and it has a terrible resolution. This will probably be the most immediate upgrade.

Some sort of heat source. The barn is not insulated, so I will be using infrared heaters placed around the hitting area for some level of comfort. Eventually plan to frame in that portion of the barn and build out an enclosed insulated room with a loft area on top for a pool table, but that will have to wait a bit.

Then I'll probably toss some material behind the screen so the projector doesn't bleed through so much.

    ----

That's it for now! I'm hoping to post some progress pics over the holiday break.

Looks great, what area are you in? I have a golf shed in Idaho and haven’t finished insulating it yet and it great pretty cold during the winter months.

      enjoy the golf!

My apologies for the delay! I'm in upstate New York. On the not-so-cold days, I'll haul the computer and projector out to the barn for a couple of rounds. But as the temperature continues to plummet I'm trying to figure out the best way to insulate the space in the barn.

I think in the near term I'm going to be boxing in that section of the barn with 6 mil plastic, basically enclosing the space so I can use space heaters to make it comfortable enough to play and practice through the winter.

The long-term plan is to completely frame that space out so it's an enclosed insulated room within the barn. Much easier for climate control and will allow me to keep all my gear out there even in the coldest temperatures. The barn is tall enough that the top of the framed room will act as loft space for additional activities... Pool table, and hopefully an old school Golden Tee arcade cabinet.

Hello Golfbarn, How did you attached the blackout fabric? I just ordered some blackout curtain from Canvas Etc. and I was wondering how you fastened it to the frame. Any tips would be great.

      Thanks

golfbarn - great setup! Congratulations on finishing.

I'm still building (inside) my shed, but nearly done... Like you I'm trying to get heat into the space so I can finish... Regarding your comment:

I can tell you one thing. After the last 2-3 weeks trying to heat with 3 different kinds of heaters (unsuccessfully), I've determined the only way to go is a Mini Split. The 2 I list below seem to be the best for the price, especially the Della as I've found that having control via an App is really the only way to go. I have a 'HeatStorm' now that allows that and I cannot live without having control of heat at any time via an App on my phone.

Here are the 2 that I think are the best for the job:
1.) Della 9,000 BTU with A/C / heater and Ductless Inverter system, 20 SEER, 8 HSPF, 1 Ton heat pump, pre-charged condenser & full installation kit:
Amazon.com: DELLA Vario 9000 BTU Mini Split Air Conditioner & Heater Ductless Inverter System, 20 SEER Energy Efficient, Pre-Charged Condenser Cools Up to 450 Sq. Ft, Full installation 16.4 ft kit included : Home & Kitchen

2.) Senville SENL-09CD Mini Split Air Conditioner Heat Pump, 9000 BTU 19 SEER 110/120V ($100 off at this link right now)
Amazon.com: Senville LETO Series Mini Split Air Conditioner Heat Pump, 9000 BTU 110/120V, Inverter, Works with Alexa, SEER2 21.5, White : Home & Kitchen

Let me know if you have any questions, I've tried all the heating methods there are, nothing gets me above 56 degrees! I'm certain the Mini Split will.

Thanks for the comment, Brett. I was definitely leaning into a mini-split system once I have the room built out and enclosed. I love the idea of having an app to control the temperature... That way I can get the system up and running prior to heading out to the barn on some days. Something I haven't thought about, but it's definitely on my list now.

As I get closer to that part of the project I'll be sure to reach out if I have any questions. Thanks again!

golfbarn - sure thing, let me know if you have questions. You are exactly right, the App control on the heating/cooling is the only way to go. After having that on one of my heating units I realized that it's the only option for turning up the heat on a moments notice so I can go out and play, and the rest of the time have it run on a schedule. Otherwise, I would be running outside to my shed to turn it up manually.

Also, being able to monitor temperature has been a huge help, I picked up a thermopro bluetooth transmitting thermostat, it lets me see over time what the temperature is doing out there and the humidity. This is the one that works great: https://tinyurl.com/digital-TempHumid-bluetooth

Good luck getting it all built out... I know if you're like me, the waiting/building can drive you crazy sometimes with how long it seems to take. There's a lot to do, and a lot of building to take place.
    Working...
