  • Help: dimensions, retractable screen, general input

My Launch Pro is ordered. I've got a basement room with usable space of about 15'x12' with 9' 2" ceilings everywhere except where the screen could be mounted; as you can see in my diagram, my ceiling hangs a foot lower there. I have room for the tee to be as far back as 8 feet from the screen. My wife is adamant this monstrosity is concealable - the screen must be retractable. The way I see it I have two options:

    (1) Mount a retractable screen on the ceiling as is. The concern: depending on how far down the retractable rolling mechanism must be mounted, I may only have like 7.5 feet of usable screen. Par2Pro video on their retractable screen makes it look like the screen rolled up is nearly a foot top to bottom. I can't imagine 7.5 feet of usable height is ideal...

    (2) My second option - and this one scares me - is cutting drywall and recessing the rolling mechanism for the retractable screen up into the ceiling. Obviously this would only work if the trusses (not sure if that's the right word) run parallel to the screen. It would also require there not be any pipes or other nonsense up in there. The chances of all that working out seem small, and I hate the idea of cutting a bunch of drywall just to see if it's feasible.

I'm very open to advice regarding the above and/or literally anything else about my situation. I'm in the very beginning stages and all I currently have is the Launch Pro, Fiberbuilt mat and a nerd friend trying to find me a computer.

Most likely that ceiling drops down because they needed to frame around obstacles such as hvac ductwork. Option2 is definitely a long long shot

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Such a bummer.

I have a soffit in my garage where my retractable screen is mounted. The height of the screen is 86", so barely 7 feet. I'm hitting from 9 feet away and even with a 64 degree wedge I've never had an issue. If you have launch angles above 32 degrees it may be a problem though.

That's really, really good to know. My launch angles with my 56 and 60 are around 29. Of course I fear that one that's high, but I suppose if I take into account I'll be a foot closer to the screen than you with maybe a few more inches of screen height I might be okay. I'll just keep blading my flop shots like normal and should be good!

Our custom retractable screen systems (https://store.gunghogolf.com/Retract...ens-c116249909) drop down only about 4.5" from the ceiling until you'll have usable screen for the image - above that, we'd recommend foam wedges and tiles glued to the ceiling to protect against roller hits and ceiling strikes (we can provide those materials as well). That would leave you almost 7'10" from floor to top of image, which is plenty if you're hitting from only 8 feet back.

Regarding the 8 feet back - you'll likely need to be more like 7.5' from screen to ball, in order to also have room behind you for a full driver swing. 15' room depth is bare minimum for an adult male with driver and requires a very precise ball location for room fore and aft.

You can use foam tiles on the right wall to maximize image width, or inset another retractable roller on the right about 4.5' deep with black cloth set 5" in from the side wall. If you're only supporting righties in the room, you could get by with no roller and no foam on the left irregular wall, as righties never pull a shot that dramatically. (With a 12' wide room, ball position will need to be only 4.5' from the right side wall for driver clearance on the left wall.)

Other considerations: we recommend at least 15" clearance from screen to wall behind, and also recommend you have protection along the floor in front of the bottom hem weight bar, which will hang about 1.5" off the floor. Best floor solution is 1" EVA foam tiles with turf on top that stops where the screen hangs, then a little additional ramp under the turf to raise it up in front of the weight bar another 1.5". That means you'll lose 3" more of image height, but again, the image will still be very nicely sized in that room.

If you call us, Charlie, Jake, or I can talk you through everything in more detail. Phone number on product page above.

I've heard really great things about your products - especially some of what you guys are doing with mats. This was so helpful and I can't thank you enough! I'll absolutely be in touch. What are the best times to call?

One other question - I see that Par2Pro's retractable screen has both a SportScreen and impact screen (and perhaps that's why it's thicker when rolled up?) The one you guys sell - is that just a single screen?

We're open 9-6 central M-F. Best time to call is typically 10-5.

We use only impact screen on our roller systems. Netting isn't necessary with either our Birdie or Eagle screen, and only adds to the bulk when rolling up. We prefer Eagle for retractables - being a premium 3-layer (thicker) material, it hangs flatter and doesn't curl as much on the free side edges.
